Defenseman George Benitez of Darien will be playing
his college lacrosse at Division I Stony Brook.
George Benitez is one of four rising seniors for five-time state champion Darien that have committed to college programs. The defenseman is headed to Stony Brook University.
When did Stony Brook start recruiting you and what events did they see you play?
It has been some time now but it was through Darien High School and the Connecticut Chargers with the great coaches, like Jeff Brameier, Scott Bulkley and the other Darien coaches. Also at the Super Juniors Connecticut and several tournaments in the spring and summer.
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Stony Brook?
Stony Brook is a very good lacrosse program, as well as and excellent academic program. I was most impressed with the coaches and their commitment to the players and the team.
When did you unofficially visit the campus and what were your thoughts on the visit and your conversations with the coaches?
Back in February. It’s a nice campus with good facilities and a good setup for the team’s athletes. The coaches are a dedicated group and I was impressed with their commitment to the program.
Do you take pride being part of a program that has produced so many Division I players and when did it first become your goal to play at the D-I level?
Yes. I have been blessed to play under a great program at Darien and am truly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of its success. I have always have had the drive to play in a top D1 program and was willing to do whatever it takes to reach my goal of competing for a chance to win a D-I national championship as well as receive a great education at the same time.
