The NCAA is considering a proposal that could mean the end of early verbal commitments.
The measure, which would prevent recruits from giving verbal commitments prior to July following their junior year in high school, is on the table because recruits now feel pressure to commit early, according to the Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet, the proponents of the measure.
The proposal will now be considered by the NCAA Legislative Council. A vote is expected to come sometime early next year.

This potential ban can’t come soon enough!
Here, here!
Encourage them to go a step further and move the date to September!
Did anyone hear anything about Swarthmore tournament?
This is an organiation that gets almost everything it does wrong. This would be a great thing if they pass it.
rolaxx, LI Express won the King of the Hill Tournament at Swarthmore.
The local Prime Time kids went undefeated in bracket play (beating Chesapeake Rock, and Green Turtle, etc.) – but didn’t qualify for the top bracket based on having a lower goal differential than the LI Express (who were in their bracket – but didn’t play them).
Prime Time the Clams from New England in their playoff semi, then lost to a team made up of Maryland Prep School kids 8-7 in their final game. Losing 7-0, they closed the gap, but ran out of time. Daniello apparently didn’t play in the final game, after getting hurt in the all-star game the night before.
Only Daniello made the all star team for PT – which again shows the politics involved in the process at many of these camps. Clams had 4 kids make it, and Prime Time beat them by 3. I guess sometimes its who you know, at least sometimes they settle it on the field.
Good move – but I can see even if this changes colleges still pressuring kids before July of their junior year to give non-official verbal commitments – kind of bending the rules.
If someone can describe just how this would be enforced with any teeth behind it, then there’s a chance it might work. I just got back from Jake Reed’s Blue Chip rising junior camp and heard that an attackman from St. Paul’s MD, Spencer Parks, “is committed” to UNC. Not thinking about it, not on their radar screen, but a done deal. This apparently occurred without a single contact by the UNC staff with the young man, which would be a violation of the current NCAA rules. So what would change about these early committments, other than pushing them into the “hush-hush” category such as Parks’?
I’m sitting here, wondering if anyone with the NCAA reads this blog because they might go in to work tomorrow and open an investigation into UNC lax and Mr. Parks. lol.
The NCAA does so much that is self-aggrandizing that it is sometimes hard to take them seriously. However…
It would be virtually un-enforcable in a timely manner, just like the current rules are for football, basketball etc. However, if installed, it will act as a deterrent to coaches who must think 3, 5 10 years down the road.
If players and coaches want to make a deal today they will find a way, no problem, but coaches/programs will have to understand that there is no statute of limitations on finding infractions and the NCAA is very patient.
Just ask USC football. Pete Carroll saw this coming!
LOL.
There’s another 2012 player, Patrick Kelly of Calvert Hall, another MIAA school, who has listed a verbal committment to UNC on his UA underclassman profile, along with his UA teammate Spencer Parks. So much for hush-hush.
Seems as if rather than initiating contact with rising juniors on Sept. 1, the Tar Heels will simply be done. Is that how it goes with all the Top 10 D1 schools and these Top 50 prospects?
Joe – nice job breaking the news about this last month. Since then I have seen ESPN, Inside Lacrosse and others pick up on this proposal being made. It will be interesting to see if it happens.
