Rivalry Weekend is one for the books, folks.
Now we’re getting set for a big week of marquee matchups, including Ward Melville vs. West Islip, John Jay vs. Somers/Round 2, Ridgefield vs. Yorktown, Darien vs. Yorktown, Fairfield Prep/Chaminade and Cold Spring Harbor/Manhasset.
And more.
So let’s start talking about all those mega matchups.
Let’s also take a quick look back at some big results from this weekend:
Manhasset 7, Garden City 6: Manhasset senior midfielder Drew Belinsky broke a 6-6 tie with 10 seconds remaining as the Indians won the 119th Woodstick Classic for the second straight year. Thirteen different players accounted for the 13 total goals scored. Garden City had led 6-4 midway through the fourth quarter. Manhasset now leads the all-time series 66-52.
Lakeland/Panas 10, Yorktown 7: Sophomore Chris Monteferante was dominant on faceoffs, especially in the crucial third quarter, as the Rebels outscored Yorktown 5-0 in the third quarter to win just their third Murphy Cup in the event’s 21-year history. The score was tied at 5-5 at the half. Senior goaltender Rob Belger made 12 saves for the Rebels. Junior Conor Prunty had three goals and two assists. Will Fallo had two goals and two assists and Rob Caffrey two goals and one assist. Kevin Interlicchio had four goals, all on extra-man opportunities, for Yorktown.
Darien 11, New Canaan 5: Providence College-bound senior midfielder Brian Annecchino had three goals as the Blue Wave picked up their fifth straight win in this tradition-rich series. Darien rallied to go ahead 4-3 at the half after New Canaan had led 3-1 after the first quarter. The Blue Wave went on to stretch the lead to 7-3 early in the fourth quarter. Graham Maybell and Brian Gleason each had two goals for Darien. Oliver North led the Rams with two goals.
Rye 13, Rye Country Day 6: In the Battle of Rye, the Garnets jumped ahead 3-0 in the first quarter and pulled away to deal the Wildcats their first loss of the season.
Also of note yesterday, John Jay picked up just its second win in program history on Long Island, beating Syosset 12-8. The Indians built a 9-3 lead late in the third quarter against the 2008 Class A state finalists.
In a prep showdown, Westminster beat Brunswick 9-8 in overtime.

Jay 12-9 over Somers

I just don’t get it? What a up and down team (TOWN) who are theese guys?. Joe and Cuse I would love to get your thoughts. As for myself here we go. I don’t think Town is as good as the team that beat Chaminade or as bad as the team that lost yesterday to L/P. They are not consistant. And that will spell their DOOm in the Sec 1 playoffs. They nevr should have lost to JJ as they were up 5-1(NO dis-respect to the purple Nation. But when you have that type of a lead and you are at home you should not BLOW it NO excusses. They were up 5-2 and 5-3 and 5-4 yesterday. They played a sloppy game. (No dis respect L/P . In fact I congratulate you on such a good game plan and sticking to it. At times this team looks great and at others looks like a team that does not know what to do. They are an enigma I have no clue how they will do the rest of the way. I think Dave better get on the ball and straighten this team out quickly. J.T would not stand for this either would G.W. two former Yorktown coaching greats.. One other thought. perhaps Yorktown does not know themselves what type of a team they are perhaps that is why they struggle so often. They were great against Somers who beat L/P they were Sloppy against Arlington, but still won by 7. And yesterday I just don’t know. what happened to them. Except for the fact they won very few faceoffs. I hope they get it together. I wish them luck for the remainder of the season. Go Town. .

PV won 10-4. Went up 10-0 at half. Played sloppy in the second and gave up a few late goals.

these are the worst blog entries for me to write- when Town loses. But nonetheless I am here to put out my opinion.
Consistency. That has been ‘Town struggle for the whole year. We saw the team that blew a lead to JJ, that got hammered by GC. But we also saw the team that easily took out Chaminade and Somers. What gives? Unfortunately with an unnecessarily tight win over PV, and now this loss to LP.. we have seen more of the bad end of inconsistency from Town this year.
Monteferante was a beast for LP in the faceoff circle. I don’t know if this really has to be addressed for Yorktown because Chaminade and LP consistently produce some of the best faceoff guys around. Monty played an integral role in obtaining the much dominated possession for the Rebels.
It was a good sign for the midfield when Mabus put in the first goal of the game- as a fan I thought this was a sign of good things to come. Town took the early lead but you could always feel LP creepin in the rear view mirrors. Contrary to Town’s struggles, LP’s strength was its consistency. Despite going down early, they stuck to their gameplan and it paid off. Sometimes a lackluster Plan A is better than a Plan B, and thats what LP proved today because persistence gave them the victory.
KI did have 4 goals but it wasn’t his best performance. These goals came on man-up scenarios when he was able to unleash lasers from afar. But KI did come up when he was needed. It was interesting to see the stat line of the game. In the beginning of the year we saw the role players step up while he was recovering from injury. Today he put KI-like numbers up but some of the ‘Town players that have been essential to their success thus far were non-existant. Fazio was just a heckler… he was a hard-working kid that used his speed and quickness to pester Interlicchio. The offense lacked fluidity. The interesting thing is that I believe Yorktown actually did unleash more shots than LP, they just couldn’t put it in the back of the net. They had some doorstep opportunities that they just couldn’t take advantage of.
The good news for Town is that these flaws today are correctable. The only thing they have to trust the players to obtain is consistency.. or else it may haunt them come playoffs. Theres not a doubt in my mind that Town will be in the section final- what this matchup told me is that LP will be there as well.

Hey you’re an expert on Town for sure. But I felt Town had a GOOD game vs PV in light of (1) KI came out hurt after the 1st Q, (2) understand some starters were held out in Q1, (3). wasn’t Burke out injured? (4). Really saw the depth and teamwork of the other O kids aside from KI!
This is a crazy season!! Saw the Town/Cham game and was SO impressed with Town’s performance (even w/o winning face-offs!). Huge part of why I had Town favored over LP!
It’s almost totally useless making predictions when the very top teams play each other!!!!

Yes, it will, LAXman. The air date for that in the Hudson Valley/Connecticut region will be this Thursday, May 6 at 8 p.m. on Channel 14 (Optimum) and various other times, including Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m. and Sunday, May 9 at 4 p.m.

Field has played a pretty weak sched so far (compared to Town) EXCEPT for Staples (1 goal loss) and Lville who is down this season. So yeah I’ll stay with my prediction.

Well I haven’t seen Ridgefield play but I’m looking at their schedule and it’s very weak. Yorktown will be their toughest opponent yet.

What are people’s thoughts on Darien vs. Yorktown? After watching the Blue Wave dismantle New Canaan this weekend, I see a victory for Darien (probably 2 or 3 if the good Yorktown shows up, a lot more if the bad one shows up).

Speaking of stats haven’t heard from you lately??
The only thing we know about Section 1 so far this season is that we don’t know. Town looks average, Town looks great, Town looks average. Somers is the best team in the section, they’re down, they could be the best team in the section. Watch out for L/P, oof, they lose to Mercer Island, they beat Town a week after Town dominates Chaminade. If you told me that John Jay was 10-1, their only loss was to one of the Top 5 teams in the country, and they beat Town, Somers, Syosset and Corning East, I would say that they are back to their Bocklet/ Daniello days, but they could lose to a handful of Section teams and no one would be stunned.
I think the teams that wins Sectionals will be the ones who find their groove at the right time, pure and simple. There are no clear favorites for any of the classes. If I take of my JJ hat, and the whole Sec 1 vs. other regions view, this will be the most interesting sectionals in quite some time, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Excellent observation. They might as well play the theme song from “twilight zone” before each big game!! Section 1 is “other worldly” this season!!
Denial is an interesting phenomenon to watch.
Time and again Yorktown faithful have wondered aloud ‘what is wrong with Town?’ Well, nothing is wrong. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other guys and admit they’re better (for that day, the season, whatever.) Programs ebb and flow, and whereas Yorktown and John Jay used to be immune to those flows they are no longer the de facto best teams by simply showing up.
Someone had mentioned here a few days back that he loves the way L/P flies below the radar on this blog and he has a point too. They do, but that doesn’t take away that they are a really good team and are in position to win the sectional championship in a few weeks.
Yorktown will be a contender for the title along with L/P, JJ and even Mahopac. You can talk all you want about those teams not winning for this reason or that, some of it is based on fact while other aspects are based on style points and that’s why they play the games. Yorktown has a chance to prove they are the best, but they, along with all the others, must now prove it on the field and don’t forget, the rules say you must win by one or more goals and there are no style points.
And that’s where the denial comes in with two bloggers here I admire a lot. Fanagan ‘has no doubt’ that Yorktown will be in the finals. Really? Based on what? They’ve already lost to their two chief opponents this year, so why are they a certainty? Where does it say that they’ll get past the semi’s if they get matched up with either of the two? Style points? Strength of schedule? Because they’re Yorktown? Fuggedaboutit. In order for them to get to the finals they will have to do something they haven’t done yet, beat their rivals. That puts them in a precarious position.
Doid talks about the ‘only thing we know is that we don’t know’ about Section One this year. He’s right, but the bloggers are all looking at the equation from the inside out – from Yorktown’s point of view.
Try looking at it from the outside in and what you see is that Yorktown is a team capable of winning it all, but they aren’t the favorites, not because of what they’re doing wrong, but rather because of what the other teams are doing right.
What’s wrong with Yorktown? They aren’t the strongest team in the section this year and their main shopping center is too crowded.

No Style Points – very good point on the increased depth of Section 1. My Bias is that it is increased depth and not increased mediocrity. I just hope the season ends where Somers and JJ are not on the same side of the bracket and that Town, Pac and LP don’t see each other at least until Semi’s. Would hate for the best 2-4 teams to play earlier than needed. Should we add style points for seeding (LOL). PV, Rye, Pville, BH all look like on any given day can win it.

I respect your thoughts… but there is reason to my belieft that Town will be in the section finals without a doubt. With all do respect, I would say that Town has beaten two of their rivals- Mahopac and Somers. One of whom will be in their class for sectionals. They did lose to JJ and Panas, one of whom will be in their class for sectionals.
After Mahopac’s performance against Town, it is evident to me that the clear two favorites to reach the section final are Town and LP. Yes yes, I know my views have some bias but Coach Marr and the rest of his staff will have Yorktown ready for the end of the season like he always does.
Ask Joe, I often compare Section 1 this year to the NCAA basketball tournament- there is no clear cut favorite. What brought Duke the championship? Intangibles, tradition, and confidence. Knowing this Yorktown squad- they possess all three. Will there be a Butler- who knows… seems like Mamaroneck is flying under the radar. But Yorktown will be in the section finals- mark my words.. if not I’ll be eating them instead.

It’s pretty much impossible to say Yorktown and L/P will be in the A finals because, thanks to the utterly ridiculous way Section 1 has adapted seeding throughout all sports, you could very well, try this one on for size, get an Arlington-L/P final, or Yorktown-L/P semifinal or, who knows? Maybe a West Genny-Yorktown play-in game.
Section 1’s seeding system has a chance to cause too many problems and debates than we can all count. All I know is if you get the matchup everyone wants and expects (fans know best, they always do) in anything short of a sectional final there will be hell to pay. No one is talking about it now because we don’t really know how things will ultimately play out, but rest assured someone of the Yorktown or Somers ilk will be a 4-seed despite having beaten 2 of the teams seeded ahead of them during the regular season.
Someone like a Town will be decimated in the seeding because they play the toughest schedule in the country and games against Connecticut don’t count while losses to teams on Long Island do. Since when does either impact Section 1’s tournament?
I guess we can blame the economy and likely Obama for this one, too? Please.
And when this all happens, the fangs and claws will come out and Section 1 tournament organizers will likely turn several shades of purple.

Ytown has to stop playing WM and GC and start playing Peekskill and Rossevelt if they want the top seed and a quick elimanation from the state playoffs. Makes no sense

Hv Lax thought people would get a chuckle (ESL) My son made up the word a few years ago and it stuck in my head. I am trying to use it so it eventually ends up in the dictionary. Definition of Imbiot: a mixture of Idiot and Imbecile (and yes it is a retarded word but it makes me laugh). With the seeding formulas I may have a chance.
On another note does anyone have any insight on Shenendowa as I see they have beat Nisky and have at most allowed 5 goals in any game they have played so far?

Shen’s coach was a teammate of mine in college. Chuck Holohan has developed that program nicely and they will be a handful for either Town or L/P. Nisky is down a bit this year, but any time a Section 2 team beats Nisky they should frame it because it doesn’t happen all that often. Shen is the most balanced team in Section 2, if that means anything to anyone.
