Two of the top juniors in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region – Darien defenseman Eric Parnon and St. Anthony’s midfielder Joe LoCascio – will continue their collegiate careers at Maryland.

Parnon, who is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, has quickness that belies his size.

Now, here’s a Q&A we conducted with Eric on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Maryland?
After taking a visit to the University of Maryland in September, I knew that it was where I wanted to go. The campus was great, I felt very comfortable with the team, and the coaches are terrific. Also Maryland has a past filled with great defensemen. I would like to be a part of this. Maryland is in the ACC which is a tough conference that will be very competitive.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was in contact with other schools, but I only got a chance to visit Colgate and Siena before Maryland. After seeing Maryland I, did not need to see anymore schools. Maryland was a perfect fit.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I think that the biggest adjustment will be the speed of the game. I would also like to continue to lift hard.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my size and my quickness. My style of play would have to be something like forcing a turnover and pushing the ball up the field.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Darien has had some great teams over the years and I think that I have been a part of two of the best so far. As a defenseman, I got a lot out of being on the same team as Jameson Love, Freddie Schweizer and Tim Clinton my freshman year. Last year we had some great defensive players that I learned a lot from like Corey Caputo, Ryan Mulligan and Matt Gorski. From a more competitive aspect, I think that I have benefitted from playing against attackmen such as Tyler Foley and Nikki Dysenchuck. I have learned a lot from Andrew West. It was a huge help to have such talented classes before me.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the D-I level?
I always had the idea that lacrosse was something I wanted to pursue in college. After meeting with Coach (Jeff) Brameier my freshman year, I think I realized that I wanted to play Division I lacrosse. Coach Brameier has helped me a lot over my high school career. I am really lucky to have a dedicated coaching staff like we have at Darien.
