Freshman midfielder Jeff Froccaro of Port Washington (left) had three goals, including a crucial insurance goal with 2:09 remaining, as eighth-ranked host Princeton edged No. 11 Hofstra 17-14 today.
The game marked the debut of first-year Princeton head coach Chris Bates, (pictured below right) a 1985 John Jay graduate who took over the Princeton program after Tigers legend Bill Tierney left to coach Denver.
Bates, the former Drexel coach, once again matched wits against Hofstra’s Seth Tierney as the two have done during many heated CAA battles the last few years.
Another freshman from Long Island, Plainedge product Rob Bellairs, played the entire second half in goal for Hofstra, evenly splitting playing time with starter Andrew Gvozden, a sophomore.
Hofstra, which fell behind 3-0 in the opening minutes, rallied to trake a 10-9 lead early in the third quarter.
Here are some other college notes:
* Somers’ Mike Novosel made 15 saves and Darien’s Nikki Dysenchuk scored a goal in his collegiate debut as Dartmouth opened the season with a 7-3 upset win at Colgate.
It was the head-coaching debut for first-year Dartmouth coach Andy Towers, who has served as an assistant at Dartmouth and Fairfield and head coach at Hartford.
Dartmouth outscored the Red Raiders 4-0 in the third quarter to open up a 6-1 lead.
Colgate, which lost its opener to Binghamton 7-6, is 0-2.
* No. 7 Maryland rallied to overtake No. 13 Georgetown 15-13 to improve to 2-0. Maryland had fallen behind 8-4 in the first half.
* Darien’s Cooper MacDonnell had two goals and an assist as No. 10 Loyola pulled away for an 11-5 win at ECAC host Quinnipiac. Loyola led 5-3 at the half.
* Casey Grugan, a senior attackman for Cabrini (the 12th-ranked team in Division III) looks to extend his consecutive goals streak to 56 games today againast Haverford.
Earlier this week, Grugan broke the NCAA record of 54 games set by Washington College’s John Cheek in 1977 in a 16-7 win against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Be sure to weigh in with info/thoughts on these and other games, especially games you may have attended.
