We thought we’d have a CHSAA Class AAA champion crowned yesterday. But the weather got in the way of that (in the form of lightning and such). So St. Anthony’s and Chaminade will resume their suspended game today.
Also today, the FCIAC championship will be decided at Brien McMahon in Norwalk, Iona Prep and Holy Trinity meet for the CHSAA Class AA title and the Suffolk Class A semifinals will be played, with the winner advancing to next Thursday’s final at Stony Brook University.
The FCIAC title game, set for 7:30 p.m. at Brien McMahon, and features and intriguing matchup between third-seeded New Canaan (15-3), which has won nine straight since falling to Darien 11-5, and a Cinderella Greenwich team (10-7) that is coming off stunning back-to-back quarterfinal and semifinal wins over defending FCIAC champion Ridgefield and five-time Class M state champion Darien, respectively.
Now, to the Suffolk Class A semis. Here’s today lineup:
Class A
No. 4 Connetquot (14-3) at No. 1 West Islip (16-1), 4 p.m.
No. 3 Smithtown West (13-4) at No. 2 Ward Melville (15-2), 4 p.m.
In the CHSAA, top-seeded Iona Prep (14-6), a day after its seniors took part in graduation ceremonies, faces No. 2 Holy Trinity (11-7) in the Class AA title game.
St. Anthony’s and Chaminade will finish out their game, which was played yesterday at C.W. Post University, at a new location. They will play at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip with the score tied at 7-7 and just over six minutes remaining in regulation.
Also in Connecticut today, No. 2 Fairfield Prep faces No. 1 Cheshire in the SWC title game at Branford High School.
Weston and New Fairfield meet for the SCC title at 7:30 p.m. at Brookfield High School.

WI 14 Connetquot 9
WM 8, Smithtown West 7
CT state pairings up. Such a bad system. Ridgefield, Greenwich, staples and f prep in same half of L bracket. N Canaan, darien and Wilton in same half of M bracket. Greenwich best 12 seed in history. Ridgefield got a tough opener with Greenwich but at least at home.
Chaminade leads 8-7 with two minutes remaining in regulation in the resumption of their suspended game.
Final: St. Anthony’s 9, Chaminade 8 (OT)
St. A’s, which fell behind 8-7 with two minutes remaining in regulation, forced OT on a goal by Maryland-bound junior Joe Locascio with 24 seconds to go in the fourth quarter. Colin Clive then scored the game-winner with 54 seconds left in overtime off a feed from Tom Schreiber.
Chesire 3, Fairfield Preo 0 midway through the first quarter.
Smithtown West and Ward Melville are tied 1-1 with 8:33 left in the first quarter, Chris Keiser reports.
Final: Cheshire 13, Fairfield Prep 5
James Pannell scores to give Smithtown West a 2-1 lead with 8:15 left in the second quarter.
Nick Giampaolo evens it up at 2-2 at the halrf for Ward Melville. Smithtown West has won every faceoff.
Joe, why Darien so low in the HV/CT rankings? They have a very off game against a red-hot Greenwich team (plus playing against the guy who built their defense), and lose by 1 despite not winning a faceoff and hitting several pipes. How can you put Greenwich above them just like that, when Darien beat them handily just a week earlier? Also, Darien absolutely handled NC earlier in the season, and beat Yorktown by miles more than LP (who has worse losses and less quality wins) and John Jay (only team you could make an argument for #1, but the only great team they faced they got handled, so even them I wouldn’t put above Darien). As for Brunswick, you must not have seen the way they closed out the season — they also still don’t have a quality win (Greenwich in midseason isn’t nearly the same as Greenwich now, and St. Andrew’s is decent but not a season-defining win).
relax –
For me, a sectional championship or conference championship game is kind of like a final exam that might count for 50% of your grade. It carries a lot more weight than any of the regular-season games you mentioned. As I noted before, the postseason really is a new season. That is not to discount the regular season, but at this point it counts at least as equally as the regular season.
James Pannell scores the first goal of the second half. Smithtown West now leads Ward Melville 3-2.
Fair enough. I myself think that the regular season is a better indicator of how good a team is than one postseason game (see Gilman two years ago — they ended up 6th in the final IL polls, but IMO they were still the best team).
Mazzone scores for Ward Melville early in the third. It’s tied 3-3.
Giampulo scores for WM, which now leads 4-3 with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Relax –
You can make a good argument for either school of thought. Darien can certainly play its way back up in the state tournament.
Bellavia makes a huge stop for Ward Melville with 36 seconds left.
Final: Ward Melville 4, Smithtown West 3
West Islip leads Connetquot 13-9 late in the fourth.
WI 13-9 final

What a run by Greenwich taking FCIACs 5-4 over New Canaan….congrats!
Iona Prep 7, Holy Trinity 6 CONGRATS GAELS!
Looks like it’s time for Section 1 to take GREENWICH down!!
Great job by the Cardinals, congrats to Coach Bulkley and all staff and players. Class L wide open this year.
Congrats to all the Greenwich players and coaches! Bring on section I, you line them up and we’ll knock them down…
Sam Reynolds scores in the 2nd OT to give New Fairfield a 4-3 win over Weston in the SWC title game.
CT Lax,
So New Fairfield doesn’t get a chance to play Greenwich in state championship play? Too bad if the case. Wasn’t at the game but I think some folks thought NF was among the best teams Rye played this season.
