It’s playoff time, gang. Action starts today in Long Island and continues throughout the week throughout the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.
Today in Nassau, in first-round Class A games, No. 16 Glen Cove visits No. 1 Wantagh. No. 13 MacArthur is at No. 4 South Side at Skelos Field in Rockville Centre and No. 12 Calhoun visits No. 5 Lynbrook at 4:30 p.m at Lynbrook South Middle School. At 4:45 p.m., Hewlett hosts Carey.
In Connecticut, five-time defending state champion Darien faces a Greenwich team coached by someone who played a big role in that run of titles. First-year Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley was an assistant to Jeff Brameier during that run. Action gets under way at 4:30 p.m. at Darien’s Stadium Field.
Elsewhere, New Canaan hosts Trinity Catholic at 5:30 p.m., defending Class S Connecticut state champ St. Joseph-Trumbull visits Norwalk at 6 p.m. at Testa Field. Defending FCIAC champion Ridgefield hopes to snap a two-game losing streak when it hosts Trumbull at 6:30 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium. At 7 p.m., Westhill visits Danbury, Stamford is at Brien McMahon, and still unbeaten Staples visits Fairfield Ludlowe.
There’s a big regular-season finale featuring one of the region’s premier rivalries, Wilton and Yorktown, as the teams meet for the Jim Turnbull Cup, with the game honoring the coach who co-founded the Yorktown program along with Charlie Murphy and who led the Huskers to five of their six state titles.
To add some interest to the matchup (which has no sectional seeding implications), Yorktown senior attackman Kevin Interlicchio, who has 172 goals through his four-year varsity career, needs seven goals to break the all-time career school record for goals of 178, held by 1993 YHS grad and former Syracuse University standout Paul Carcaterra, now an analyst for ESPNU and the MSG Network.
In the Hudson Valley, Nanuet visits Albertus Magnus at 4:15 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., John Jay hosts Arlington, John F. Kennedy hosts Haldane, Pelham visits Briarcliff and Clarkstown North plays at North Salem. John Jay, which went 10-9 last season, can finish 15-1 for the regular season with a win vs. the Admirals (10-5). It is John Jay’s Senior Day.
At 4:45 p.m., Brewster hosts Tappan Zeem and White Plains plays at North Rockland. At 5 p.m., Irvington visits Bronxville. Horace Greeley is at Rye at 6:15 p.m. and Mahopac hosts Suffern at 6:30 p.m. as the Indians celebrate their Senior Day.
Be sure to post your thoughts and predictions on these matchups, and while you’re at your game or games today, be sure to check in here with info on the scores and game details early and often.

Nyack 33/13 = 2.538
Greeley 33/15 = 2.2
Harrison 31/16 = 1.9375
5, 8, 9 and 10 look to be a lot stronger than 2 & 3, but I guess that’s why they play the games.
Ossining is 1-2 against the middle of the pack. Mamo lost to Hen Hud, but beat Eastchester and Brewster.
Somers, Scarsdale, Fox Lane, Hen Hud and Greeley all have higher laxpower ratings than Ossining.
Somers, Brewster, Greeley, Hen Hud, Fox Lane all have higher SOS than Ossining and Mamaroneck.
Hmmm…we need a new system.
lol.
Take Town today 9-8 or 15-3. Or Wilton 7-6 or 10-4. Like anyone can accurately predict anything Yorktown does.
Seriously, I like Town 9-8 with Interlicchio netting 5.
seedings-r-we,
I think Scarsdale only played 15 games so they would move in to the 3rd seed.
I also think Somers should have 47 seeding points (played 5 teams with >75% winning % and 5 teams > 50% <75%), which would move them into the 6th seed.
……I could be wrong….
Is town really that inconsistent or did Chaminade just have a bad game? Living 3k miles away has prevented me from seeing any games, so correct me if I’m wrong but town’s big wins have come against Chaminade and Mahopac. It seems that Town, Mahopac, and L/P are very close where any one of them can win the section.
From far away it seems like town has consistently played at that level except for the Chaminade game – is that truly an outlier where Town played brilliantly or did Chaminade just have an off day? Have there been other games where Town looked great?
Hoping to get some more color here…thanks for indulging an old town alum.
I’m picking Town to bounce back from last week and beat Wilton in a close one, 11-10.
Good catch Ossining Dad on Scarsdale.
Should be Scarsdale 54/15 = 3.6
Somers index is correct though.
B seedings REVISED
John Jay 64/13 = 4.9230
Win Arl. 69/14 = 4.9285
Lose Arl. 75/14 = 4.642
Mamaroneck 62/15 4.133
Scarsdale 54/15 = 3.6
Ossining 56/16 = 3.5
Tappan Zee 51/15 = 3.4
Win Brewster 55/16 3.4375
Lose Brewster 51/16 = 3.1875
Fox Lane 54/16 = 3.375
Eastchester 53/16 = 3.3125
Somers 46/14 = 3.285
Hen Hud 50/16 = 3.125

Nyack 33/13 = 2.538
Greeley 33/15 = 2.2
Harrison 31/16 = 1.9375
If TZ loses to Brewster it shakes things up quite a bit.
goodluck kev hope you brake the record, you deserve it
#13 for pac is a senior aswell. He backs up Mcguigan. From what I’ve seen he looks pretty solid, including a few unbelievable stops against wappangers
Good luck to all the seniors playing in their FINAL regular season games. It goes quick so take a minute to enjoy. It will be interesting to see which Town team showa up today. I hope Dave stresses the importance of staying focused for the entire game. Good luck K.I. in getting the scorring record, (However I do not see that happening) Town 10 Wilton 8.
And let’s get ready for the sectionals , it should be a lot of Fun Go TOWNNN. And best of luck and health to all the other players. This is what it is all about in H.S. Lax.
What changes if Brewster beats TZ?
Any scores?? Jay game??
blax,
TZ becomes the 8th seed. Fox Lane, Eastchester and Somers move up 1 seed. Brewster stays the 10th seed.
After being shut out in 2 of his last 3 games, KI shows up tonight putting 5 goals in the back of the net. The good Yorktown shows up, playing agressive D and moving the ball and keeping it hot. Look for big games from KI, McLee, and the rest of the seniors on Yorktown’s senior night.
Yorktown wins big, 14-5
Any pelham score?
Typo in John Jay index…
John Jay 64/13 = 4.9230
Win Arl. 69/14 = 4.9285
Lose Arl. 75/14 = 4.642
Should read:
Lose Arl. 65/14 = 4.642
GO KI–we’re rooting for you!!
Any score for the Brewster / TZ game ?????

John Fanagan I hope your right about K.I. and Town, It will be interesting to see of they can put a complete game together, tonight. It will be even more interesting to see how they will do in the Sec 1 playoffs as they will have a lower seed. For the first time in a long time. Again good luck to all players, As I said for the seniors take a minite look at your colors and wear them with PRIDE.
JJ- 13 Arlington- 3

Unless I missed something…Th-th-that’s all folks!
There’s a mistake with Greeley in the seeding.
Greeley 33/15 = 2.2
Should be:
Greeley 32/15 = 2.13
Lose to Rye 33/16 = 2.0625
Win Rye 37/16 = 2.3125
It’s a moot point because they can’t move up or down, but the revised seedings are here:
John Jay 69/14 = 4.9285
Mamaroneck 62/15 4.133
Scarsdale 54/15 = 3.6
Ossining 56/16 = 3.5

HG – 6 Rye – 8, ho hum game. Let’s get the playoffs started.
Not sure if the first one went through.
There is a mistake with Greeley.
Greeley 33/15 = 2.2
Should read:
Greeley 32/15 = 2.13
Lose to Rye 33/16 = 2.0625

Win Rye 37/16 = 2.3125

Greenwich was down 4-2 halway through the third. FCIAC should be a wild ride. Yorktown is losing 10-4 to a decent Wilton team?!?!?

Good luck to all…enjoy!
Congrats on a fantastic regular season John Jay! Who would of thought, especially back when there was coaching turmoil in the pre-season, that this team would go 15-1 with their only loss being to the undefeated #2 ranked team in the country? Some have complained that their margin of victory in some wins has been to small, or that they didn’t play 48 minutes, but win is a win and they finished this regular season very strong and seemingly much improved from earlier in the season. Here are the final regular season stats for anyone who wants to see:
http://johnjaylacrosse.vnsports.com/statistics/leaderstats.asp
All games in – if Somers is #7 and JJ is #1 are they on seperate sides of the brackettt??
Any update on the mahopac score?
hey I’m seeing diff scores for town game?? help
Hey, congrats Jay on a great season! Good luck in the playoffs.
Greenwich has made great strides since the beginning of the year, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I think the fact that being down by only 2 at one point in an eventual 9-2 defeat is pulling at straws and trying to validate a performance that ultimately the players should not be satisfied with (not that they played poorly, but no player should be satisfied with a 7 goal loss to a team they think they can play with). Greenwich will certainly be a factor in FCIAC, but they are going have to elevate their game even more for the playoffs. Outside of Darien there’s also a great New Canaan team, and a Wilton squad that is really heating up, plus Staples and Ridgefield (especially if Mueller can play). Don’t overlook St. Joe’s either.
If anything, the fact that all of these teams are really hitting their stride now highlights one of the key disadvantages connecticut and new england prep schools face: a significantly later start time. I’m sure Darien, New Canaan, and Wilton wish they could get another chance at Conestoga, Manhasset, St. Anthony’s, and Garden City, who all had significant head starts on their seasons.
Wilton now leads 15-4 in the 2nd half. I’m not there but the score was texted to me by someone who is. How about that???
hey joe, can you throw up 3 brackets so we can see who plays who after the first round
John Jay 69/14 = 4.9285
Mamaroneck 62/15 4.133
Scarsdale 54/15 = 3.6
Ossining 56/16 = 3.5
Fox Lane 54/16 = 3.375
Somers 46/14 = 3.285
Eastchester 52/16= 3.25
Tappan Zee 51/16 = 3.1875
Hen Hud 50/16 = 3.125
Brewster 49/16 = 3.0625
Nyack 33/13 = 2.538
Greeley 33/16 = 2.0625
Harrison 31/16 = 1.9375
Somers actually gets the 6th seed because irvington lost today. before today eastchester was at 53 pts with one pt coming from 7-7 irvington. But today with irvington falling to 7-8 Eastchester loses 1 pt giving them 52 pts and 3.25 index.
So.. you get Eastchester vs Brewster Somers VS Nyack
11-10 final in ot pac losses
I thought they would be fine, so give me well-earned kudos! lol.
To anyone who doesn’t like the JJ margin of victory in some of their games let me introduce myself by saying, “There are NO STYLE POINTS!”
The rule book says you win if you get one or more goals than the other team and John Jay has done that 15 times this season!
Congrats to the Indians on 15 wins
Congrats to:
L/P 13 wins; Honovich, Caffery and Coach Lindsey, including wins over Yorktown, PV and Mahopac
Fox Lane on 11 after an 0-2 start and an 0-2 finish, including wins over PVal and P’ville; Cam Stephens in goal
Ossining on 11 wins, including wins over Fox Lane and Hackley; Jamie McCulloch 200+ career points, Greg Bardwell in goal
Eastchester on 10 wins, Tom Cirillo and Dave Massi both near the top of the section in scoring
Scarsdale on 11 and flying under the radar all year; Danny Gluck
Rye for hanging tough and getting into the dance; Wins over RCDS and Iona Prep
Sleepy Hollow on 8-8; Coach DiVico is building a fine program
Defending champion, Somers on a 5-0 run to end the season; wins over L/P, Niskay and Ridgefield
The list goes on and on…
I’m sure that all my fellow bloggers share in our admiration for your achievements and our best wishes for a great playoff run!
Hey relax- I saw the St Ant Wilton and New Caanan games. Give me a break with “hitting there stride” the 3 and 4th string was in there for most of the second half in both games. Not even close complete blowouts
You have to switch Eastchester and Somers. Eastchester gets the 7 seed because irvington was 7-7 going into today. With the loss today that took away a pt from eastchester putting them at 52/16 with a 3.25 index. Somers has a 3.28 so somers is the 6
So then Saturday should look like this:
John Jay bye
Mamaroneck bye
Scarsdale bye
Harrison at Ossining
Greeley at Fox Lane
Nyack at Somers
Brewster at Eastchester
Hen Hud at Tappan Zee
Anyone see any mistakes?
any updates on the north salem game and the briarcliff game? means alot in class c seedings
can we please get a final on Town???
what is irvington’s final record?
If Somers is a 6 or 7 seed as now appears likely they will be on the other side of the bracket and cannot play JJ before the final but the way this season has gone with upsets, etc., who knows what the final will be though JJ and Somers are clearly the 2 best teams in Class B.
Suff really beat Pac??
15-7 Wilton final
Pac played lifeless the entire game. Got lucky that it even went to overtime. They have nothing to complain about when they get the 4th seed
Kennedy 5 Haldane 4 overtime. one of the most exciting games I have been to all year for class C
Black and Gold – You obviously didn’t watch the St. A’s-NC game. Unless Schreiber is a third stringer, that is.
is irvington 7-8 or 8-8? i think laxpower has them at 7-8 but maxpreps has them beating new ro twice making them 8-8. laxpower has them playing newro once i believe
Young Warrior,
Sorry but not sure who won the 15-7 Town/wilton game???
This now makes two years in a row Wilton has beaten Ytown in one of the most tradition rich rivalries in the country.
The final was indeed 15-7 with Wilton winning as reported here earlier. Wilton led 10-4 at the half and 5-1 after the first quarter!!!
Pelham over Briarcliff 10-5
Didn’t see the Wilton — St. A’s game, but I wasn’t implying that Wilton and New Canaan played St. Anthony’s well the first time (my point is actually quite the opposite). What I am saying is that Wilton and New Canaan could possibly give St. Anthony’s a good game at this point in the season. New Canaan led Garden City for the majority of their game, and looked good at certain points in the first matchup with St. Anthony’s. Wilton just manhandled Yorktown by a comparable score to St. Anthony’s. Wilton is definitely a better team now than the one that got smoked earlier in the year.
Anyways, i doubt that either of these teams would end up beating St. A’s in a rematch, but I think they would at least be entertaining games. I do, on the other hand, think that Darien could potentially beat Sett or Stoga in a rematch (Darien had one of their poorer showings against Manhasset, and an inconsistent Conestoga simply played their absolute best lacrosse that day — I’m not sure there is a single team in the country that could of hung with Stoga in that first half, and it was a bit surprising that Darien only lost by 4 at the end of the day).
Wilton 15
Town 7
Wilton led 10-4 half
15-4 in 4th when subs played for both
i did watch the game. it was on MSG varsity about 38 times. Schreiber scored 5 goals in the first half and played sparingly in the second half as did the rest of the first middie line. as did the first team D and attack.
Thanks Young Warrior. Good solid win for Wilton.
Rye 8-6 over HG. Think both teams averaged out playing fairly evenly over 4 quarters. Rye had the edge in the 1st half leading 6-2 with HG coming back with 4 goals in the 2nd half. Rye did get a number of shots off but only ended up with 2 more goals. HG hit the pipes as well.
Good luck to both teams in the playoffs.
So JJ will play at home Tuesday May 25th against the winner of which matchup?
JJ-Lax,
If the above seedings are correct, then it would be the winner of Tappan Zee and Hen Hud. With an Ossining or Fox Lane as a possible semi’s matchup. Would be nice to renew old rivalries with Hen Hud and Fox Lane.
slacrosse
scooter said it best, Pac looked lifeless the whole game. Almost pulled it out in OT, but almost pulling out against Suffern is no way to get ready for the playoffs. I don’t mean any disrespect to Suffern. They came to play. One of their parents said that they knew they had to play big against a team like Pac’s caliber. And did they ever. Suffern never gave up , even after Pac took their first lead, 10-9, with under a minute to play. Hopefully Pac didn’t take them lightly, this is crazy section 1. They need to step it up or it will be an early dismissal from the playoffs. I think the knots in the stomach that they feel tonight will help carry them through the playoffs. Tough loss any way you look at it, especially after having a season where they beat Somers, lost by one goal to East Islip, and took Lakeland to double OT. They know they are much better than what they showed tonight and I know that they will come out fighting and be a tough out in the playoffs.
D=PAC,
Thanx. Agree. If PAC plays up to their ability, no doubt PAC will be a tough out as you say. Too many good players and wins!! But ya gotta give a hats off to Suffern on a great effort and satisfying win for them.
What a season!
Town, nobody played well, and some of that was due to Wilton the better team won tonight. I will say onething that I don’t think sat to well with Town, besides their lousy play was they pulled most of there started with 7:36 left in the 3rd, and Wilton did not pull theirs until 6:42 left in 4th.That did not go un noticed!!
Sec1,
Why would Town have pulled its starters out so early? Marr sitting starters for not playing well? If so, the fact that Town was benching players does not mean that Wilton had to follow, particularly so early in the game when it wasn’t really a blow-out.
Sorry, maybe I’m missing your point and I wasn’t at the game.
Round 1
John Jay bye
Mamaroneck bye
Scarsdale bye
Harrison at Ossining
Greeley at Fox Lane
Nyack at Somers
Brewster at Eastchester
Hen Hud at Tappan Zee
Round 2
John Jay over Hen Hud
Brewster over Mamaroneck
Somers over Scarsdale
Ossining over Fox Lane
Round 3
John Jay over Ossining
Brewster over Somers
Finals
Brewster 31
John Jay 6
heh, heh, heh….
Neither Wilton nor Yorktown were compelled to pull anybody off the field. The game is 48 minutes.
Sounds like town got waxed. Done.
Wilton has every right to keep starters in as long as they deem fit. Playoffs coming up and need to make sure everything is fine tuned for when it really counts. If Ytown has a problemn with that then they should play better and stay in the game till the end.
And when talking about the outcome of the game you say “some of that has to do with Wilton being the better team tonight” i am curious what else does it have to do with?
ok brewster, ok
After all this talk about the new playoff system the bottom line is that Ytown and LP and Somers and JJ are gonna be on opposite sides of the bracket so they will prob meet again in the finals.
Slacrosse
Yes he benched about half his starters at that point, and I think the score was 12-4 at that point, no Wilton does not have to follow suit, but in my opinion and others that count they left theirs in to long.
No style
You are right know one is compelled to pull their starters, I can tell you if it was the other way around, Town would have. Maybe Wilton taking the op to show off program on MSG not used to getting that op like Town? These two teams have along history with each other and I have seen almost eveyone of them.
Conn Lax
I give Wilton probs for their play and say that they were the better team tonight, and you ask the question what else? Town brings A game it’s a
closer game or different outcome. But they didn’t and were beat, which is there problem.
Sooo– you are likely right, When in the playoffs Yorktown loses- all these yorktown apologists will come out of the woodowrk with some new and inventive excuses. Cant Wait,
Sec 1 – what “should not go unnoticed” is the fact that it was 10-4 Wilton at half when all starters played. After that I cant get on either coach for how they handled it. Not like it impacts anything – Wilton needed a quality win and Town gets motivation to refocus for playoffs. Good luck to both – both teams have been like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna get!
Scarsdale is an “A” team not a class “B” team. check the numbers – 1090 that is A- laxpower and everyone else was thinking B. Me included.
This mixes up to rankings. Guess we will all know for sure in a few hours.
relax. I get your point about season starting latter in Conn and would agree that Darien would have played better in the ‘stoga game but in the case of Manhassett it is funny how both Darien and JJ both good teams “had a bad day” to steal another posters line (giving full credit) they are their score (No style points) and maybe just maybe Manhassett is that good. I am not a guy that reads much into scrimmages but will use as an extra data point to support my arguement Sett took it to Melville earlier this season on the Island and I thought that was an early sign of what that team can do. Would pay good money for a Sett vs. WI game
Maybe it was the fact that it was senior night and Ytown coaches were trying to do the right thing by letting all of their seniors play?
Scarsdale is indeed in Class B for lax. No wrinkles.
Old Rugger
I agree with you…. both JJ and Darien would still lose , maybe not by the same margin to Manhassett, if the ganes were replayed tomorrow.
Scooter,
How sure are you in predicting Mahopac has the 4th seed?
Sec1 … hey come on, your team is what they show ,stop with the could of’s would of and if so and so shows up . Town is still one of the better teams out there but yu have to admitt , this is not one of the betters years. .
correct me if i m wrong town pulls their players so the other team is supposed to do the same thing(?) because why>
This statement “Maybe Wilton taking the op to show off program on MSG not used to getting that op like Town? “,. Wow come up for air. I do not feel Wilton has to prove anything. Most folks would rather have a W then be on MSG.. My friend the sun will be up tomorrow. Good luck in the next round
Lets give credit when it is Due !
I can’t criticize Wilton for staying with their regular rotation in the Yorktown game, they are likely to be a #5 seed in the FCIACs and will have a very challenging quarterfinal against either Ridgefield (likely) or New Canaan (less likely) on Saturday afternoon that is their priority to prepare for. Also the game mattered relating to Wilton’s seeding for the CT State tournament, whereas as I’ve come to learn in excruiating detail NY seedings disregard the outcomes of games with out-of-state opponents. So Wilton had to do what they needed to, which by any reasonable measure would hardly be described as piling on.
I’m taken aback at how uncompetitve Yorktown has been in these recent games wtih Darien, St. Anthony and now Wilton, each of which was effectively decided by halftime. Will they be able to turn it on for their sectional campaign? That is question #1.
I found an article from the Norwalk (Conn.) Hour which provides insight by Brien McMahon coach Mike Epstein into the FCIAC seedings and why the system where coaches who qualify determine seeding via a poll actually works well. Here’s the link:
http://www.thehour.com/story/486703
Lastly, my take on the “what-if” regarding Darien and NC’s prospects in a hypothetical rematch with teams they lost to earlier this season is that it should properly remain “hypothetical” and in the realm of blog chat fodder. Those games are on the schedule for the purpose of playing the best out of conference teams available, winning would be great, but playing them is the priority. In Darien’s case, both losses came in events whose purpose is much more important than the actual outcome of the games. They lost, no complaints, no excuses, after Manhasset they moved on to run the table for the remainder of their regular season. They play Manhasset every year, so they’ll have a chance to change the outcome then, and hopefully will draw another top-flight PA team like a Conestoga to test their mettle next season.
Did not mean to take anything away from Set. I think they are the most deserving candidate for #1 in the nation right now (although I thought Conestoga was even better on the day of the Haverford tournament), and I am not insinuating that Darien would beat them. I just would expect a game more like those in year’s past. Just to be clear, I agree that Manhasset is the best team in the region, with West Islip close behind.
Would the Section 1 AD’s PLEASE, PLEASE read the FCIAC seeding process as referred to by Lax Novice!!!
You can’t take the human element (coaches who know the competition) completely out of the equation of seedings.
While I appreciate the support of the renowned slacrosse, the FCIAC does recognize the importance of actual wins and losses via a “power-point” system that determines the eight qualifiers for the postseason tournament via a calculation with enough “if this team wins/loses then I get X” calculus to warm the heart of any stat nerd. The polling for seeding occurs only after the 8 qualifiers are determined mathematically.
Here, to straighten out all the discussion about how Wilton’s efforts versus Yorktown may or may not have helped them, here are the FCIAC first round games and seedings:
FCIAC (all games on Saturday, May 22)
8 Trumbull @ 1 Darien 11:00AM
7 St Joseph’s @ 2 Staples
6 Wilton @ 3 New Canaan
5 Greenwich @ 4 Ridgefield 1:00PM
Once again people harp on when coaches pull starters out. It’s a joke and comical. Who cares? Yorktown didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning that game and Marr knew it. The man is probably scratching his head as much as many of the fans over how this season has played out. But the truth is Yorktown isn’t very good this year. Newsflash: This happens to everyone. Now, Yorktown knows what it feels like.
Do I think Wilton is a world beater? No. But the Wilton program is beginning to take baby steps back to what it once was. Applaud them for that. Wiseman has brought the pride back and eventually the Warriors will be right back where they once were. It’s too classy of a program and too tradition rich of a Town for this not to happen.
At the end of the day, Yorktown is having issues keeping up with the Joneses. Everyone is getting better and Yorktown is not. The days of 1966-2003 are long over. LONG OVER.
The 2010 Town team would probably have been ranked in the top 5 in the state and a lock to get to the state semifinals 7 years ago. Now, it’s a program in flux because the game has reached out and grabbed hold of everyone and Yorktown has lost some of its grip. Town can no longer get by with inexperienced players playing key roles or with an entire defense having no varsity experience.
Welcome to everyone else’s world for the better part of the last four decades.
Yorktown lost just 33 games in the entire decade of the 1990s. The Huskers have lost 53 games this decade. That’s 20 more losses, or two more per season. And these losses don’t discriminate. More and more of them are happening against Section 1 foes. Yorktown made four trips to the state finals in the ’90s, winning three titles. It has made just one appearance in said game since.
The way I see it is you can look at this program going forward in two ways based on the parity across the region and the game’s growth nationwide:
1. Yorktown is resigned to be a regional power. Hope to win the section, get by Albany and call it a good season.
Or …
2. Yorktown changes the way it puts a program together, learns to maximize better its feeder program and contemplates playing where it belongs based on size classification on a year-by-year basis.
While the program should be lauded for year-in, year-out playing one of the most competitive schedules in the country, the time has come for it to stop with this grandiose notion of winning the Class A state title. Even when they were the ONLY game in “Town” the Huskers only managed to win the A title once, and that was 26 years ago.
The coach isn’t going anywhere, nor is he to blame short of wanting to win it all in A. Yorktown used to survive and advance when going through “down” cycles. The problem is its “down” cycle gave a false sense of what the future would hold. Now they barely get by and all those powerhouse games they put on the schedule aren’t doing anywhere near as much in the preparation department for June.
Embrace change, Yorktown. The time has come. No, really this time.
Syracuse….a lot of great points. But if memory serves me correctly, Yorktown won all of those powerhouse games just one year ago.
Syracuse, Amen to all of that. With a couple of thoughts/questions…
I’ve been saying this for a couple of years. The days of dominance for Yorktown just because they are Yorktown are over. Yes, I know how many sectional championships and state titles they won. They should be treasured but they are in the past. I know there is no intimidation on John Jay’s part when they play Yorktown. Yes, there is respect, but no awe. I would assume the same goes with Somers. In a given year, for a given team Yorktown has a good chance at being around at the end – but there is no longer any competitive advantage.
Petitioning to moving up in class, is extremely pompous and misguided. Manhasset doesn’t do that, Garden City doesn’t do that. The lacrosse world has changed. Play the tough non-league schedule, but play the cards you are dealt. And if you look at the underclassman at other Northern Westchester schools – winning the section will be very tough for them over the next couple of years.
Some questions…
What happened to this years team? Glimpses of good (Chaminade) mixed in with bad (losing the Murphy Cup, some bad non-league losses). It can’t be as simple as they don’t have enough talent. You don’t beat Chaminade without talent. They must have 10 kids on that team that will play in college at some level.
What is the quality of the YTown youth coaches? Are the alumni still down in the trenches teaching the next generation?
Syracuse
P&G, in response to your last comment West Genny does it, West Islip does it, Darien does it, Manhasset does it, Delbarton does it, just to name a few. I think they have pretty successful programs right? I can’t imagine this was “mandated”, but I do know those other programs do “mandate” it. This provides an opportunity to build team chemistry, build and strengthen the program because, you are right, teams, players and programs ARE getting better. Maybe this should be mandated? Maybe this is another step or the missing piece in Yorktown maintaining their dominance. How many Sectional Titles do they have? In how many years?
xxx
Syracuse: your kidding when you say that Town didn’t have a chance last night, right? They beat Pac badly; same thing for Somers; beat Chaminade and led by as many as 7–and you say they never had a chance? and the coach knew it? Stop it.
To suggest that benching starters this late in the season is a good thing is not right. The boys need confidence and to be relaxed going into the playoffs. Kids will make mistakes but if they are playing hard that is all we can ask. I can’t imagine playing on a team where if a mistake is made you are yanked. Crazy to suggest that this is a way to get the best out of your players.
The senior captains need to take over at this point. They are the ones who can lift the morale and motivate these boys. Whatever has happened to date is history.
There is more to Town than titles. Tradition, Pride, Family, Murph and the Love of the game have always and will continue to be the stuff that Town boys are made of. Hope to see you at the Section finals so you can post our victory and explain away how this town team did it —again!
Yorktown is coached primarily by Yorktown Alums. That’s a big factor. Coach Maher played right in the middle of the golden age (90,91,92). Lodewick played on the 95 team. So much of what Syracuse mentioned might be slow to sink in with the coaching staff. From 91-97 as Syracuse eluded to, Yorktown lost only four in-section games. What’s more, is the daunting point spread in the majority of the wins. You typically lost to Yorktown by 8 goals- if you were one the competitive section one teams. Clearly that era is done. Yorktown faithful believe that underneath it all, that the DNA of what made those early teams what they were might still be there. Yorktown’s schedule is a Mount Everest of top notch programs that is just too much for where the program is at this point. Ward Melville, Chaminade, St. Anthony’s, Garden City, Darien, Wilton and then John Jay and anybody competitive in Section One. That’s it guys? Really? Why don’t you schedule Roanoke or Cortland St.?
That being said, Yorktown does have what is probably the best coaching staff in the section. To be fair, the two weakest seasons they have had this decade, 06-07 resulted in a one goal sectional final loss to Jay in 06 and despite losing what seemed like a ton of in Section games in 07, ( Jay, Lakeland, Greely, Somers, and Hen Hud!) They turned it around and beat L/P in the finals, then upset Nisky, and then played a West Islip team that was superior in every way to just a 12-7 loss in the state semis.
So although we are all scratching our heads about Yorktown’s peculiar behavior, lets consider this: A 10-7 loss to Lakeland/Panas in the regular season by no means gives the Sectional Title to Lakeland. They are unpredictable, but have the ability to be explosive. The kids, although not connected to the legends of the past, are still keenly aware of what their responsibilities are.
I’ll take Yorktown in the Sectional finals over L/P in 2010. Then, next year, when they petition to go NCAA Division III, I’ll take Gettysburg over Town 17-2 on opening day- with Maher pulling the starters early in the fourth.
green alum,
Read before you post. I said it became obvious DURING the Wilton game Marr knew they had no shot at. Hence why starters were pulled when they were. I made no mention of Marr or anyone else from Yorktown not thinking they had a chance coming into the game. So, you stop.
And I did not suggest that taking out starters when you are losing is a good thing. I merely said that game was over with 7 to play in the third and everyone at the field knew it. You seriously need to learn how to read.
And you completely missed the point of this post, which no one else seemed to do. I support Town over any other team, but if you can’t criticize your team when they play like garbage, what’s the point?
Indian J,
That last paragraph of yours!! You’re too much!! I mean that in a nice way!
Can any Scarsdale fans give us a brief scouting report on their team? Who are players to watch? Besides White Plains, any big wins?
Green Alum, it was obvious to those that know that the starters were not getting it done against Wilton….And guess what – Wilton is just above average. All that Syracuse is pointing out is that if Marr pulls the plug – then don’t debate it. Your Seniors have had 16 games to exhibit “leadership” and “confidendence”. I assume he is either sending a message to his seniors and/or prepping his next group. “Half”of his starters were yanked – which is not so intelligent code – that half of them were just flat out not performing.
Leadership is earned…if it needs to be spoon fed – then all you end up with is – babies. With that said I’d bet a (sbstantial) paycheck that Marr beats L/P in th finals by less than 2.
Syracuse-read your post 104 first paragraph. That is what I was addressing. You seriously need to learn how to read what you write before getting upset.
I accept your clarification but still disagree–six or seven goals is not a lot to overcome in a hs game. This late in the year and playing up and down I just think it makes more sense to play your starters to fix whatever needs to be fixed before the playoffs.
I didn’t miss the point I just didn’t agree with it. Saying “No really this time” seemed a bit sarcastic.
for what it is worth, I happen to be at a summer tourny where Ward Melville was playing. They didn’t just have their varsity kids playing, it looked like they had the entire lax program there, at least 3 or 4 different teams in different age groups. Watched their youngest team play, and, not only were they good, they played EXACTLY the same way as the varsity…smart. controlled, defense-oriented.
Part of what is happening in many lacrosse schools is the kids now go their own way in the summer. Nothing wrong with that, there are too many showcase events now. But I do think that not only do you have to have a feeder program, it needs to be linked to the varsity level in terms of style, approach and coaching techniques.
I am sure when the Ward Melville kids come up to the varsity, they don’t have to spend a lot of time learning the basic clear/ride/emo packages, they already know them
Why is it everyone focuses on what’s “wrong” with Yorktown and never talks about the job Lindsay has done with the Lakeland program. He’s had a huge impact on that rivalry and I’ve never seen anyone talk about them. 2 Murphy Cup wins in only 5 years as the head coach, not even Vitolo did that. Every year we have them ranked below Town, Somers, Jay, Mahopac, Rye, and every year they’re one of the top two or three teams standing at the end. Before he took over most of the Town games weren’t even close and L/P was losing sectional titles to lesser Mahopac teams year in and year out. What we really should be talking about is how L/P should be the 3 time defending A champions right now if Yorktown played where they are supposed to play. My issue with them moving up is that there is no justification for it according to section I rules, especially when there is more than enough competition in class B for them. According to the rules you should only be allowed to move up a class when you can prove a certain dominance over teams within your class. Not so for boys lacrosse in our area in class B.
green alum,
Okay, I can see how you may have misinterpreted my post, but just know this is the Internet and sarcasm is a rite of passage. I mean if you strive to be notorious, you might as well be colorful process. No?
IMO this is the first Yorktown team in a while that has not shown it’s capable of turning things around late in a season. Aside from Wappingers I think no game is a lock. Suffern, if Town does indeed play Suffern, in the semifinals will likely be a handful to deal with.
Lax,
The bad news is that LP doesn’t get as much press as Town. The good news is that’s because Town is having a pretty inconsistent season and LP just keeps winning!!!
Yes you’re right on Lindsay’s record. A really solid job. I’m predicting LP to win A and you’ll see, as they advance, the “press” will get hot.
Also I dont recall anyone (at least not me) predicting Rye being better then LP (or Rye being better then any of the other teams you mentioned for that matter). Pre-season, I had LP ranked right below Somers, I think in a tie with Jay.
If you’re correct about the Section 1 rule then yeah, Town no longer belongs in A .
Syracuse: Thanks. As to Suffern, got a feeling that Town harbors a very old grudge. I am predicting a decisive win over Suffern if it is Suffern. Really looking forward to LP Town rematch. The only game that counts is the last one you play!
Does it really matter what class a team is in? What A team in Sec 1 has a prayer of beating Set?
Slacrosse: you have reached your quota for Town bashing this week. Move on. We’ll save you a seat at the regionals.
syracuse: thanks. Gotta believe that Town wants to have a decisive win against Suffern. History requires nothing less. Recent history with Suffern and Empires requires an absolute crushing victory. With this Town team it will either be one goal or ten goal win.
slacrosse: you reached your town bashing quota for the week. Move on. Don’t worry, after Town wins the sectionals we will save you a seat at the regionals.
slacrosse and lax: Lindsay was a great player and is becoming a great coach. His sideline demeanor is excellent and his boys love playing for him. He coached a great second half against Town but he will be tested since Marr & co (there are a lot of them) no doubt has something in store for the rematch.
In the first game, Town’s goalie Koelsch did not exactly have a great day and since has been playing awesome, KI was injured midway through and Lieberman was getting his hands free but they weren’t dropping.
LP still must get through an angry and explosive Pac team. Look for Okie to QB an excellent game. If Pac’s goalie shows up (on the field not on these blogs!?!?) they can give LP a run. Brando did not do much in OT loss and gotta believe that even with cement feet the kids going to throw a few torpedos past a very raw LP goalie. If you watch the LP Town game, Town must have hit him or shot it in his stick ten times.
This is going to be a great few weeks of HS lax.
green alum,
Come on. Bashing Town! Never have, never will. “Lax” was wondering why no press for LP vs Town and I gave him the facts, without any prejudice implied.
Every time Town has played out of Section 1 I’ve blogged for them to win. I have no favorites whatsoever in Section 1 except for Rye.
No need to save me a seat in the regionals. Just like in previous yrs, I’ll be there rooting for all the Section 1, A, B and C teams, whoever they may be.
Green Alum believe you may just be green with envy Town is still getting the blogging time just not the same blogging as the past. Not sure what you mean about L/’P’s goalie “raw” what makes Koelsch any less raw? You seem very angry – the could of, should of, would of has come to the end. Yorktown is not the Yorktown of past years and even the die hard crop members are not bragging nor making excuses – it is what it is. Don’t blame Syracuse and Slacrosse. Accept that the times are a changin and there are feeder programs all over Westchester parity is a great thing for our over privliged affluent offspring. Also another note, there are section 1 alum from more than just Town and they are coming back to their roots to teach and to coach. Parity will be the way of the future.
Where is John FANagan whan you need him!!…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
lacrosseinsider and slacrosse: appreciate your support for Town and agree that things are evening out. Not angry. Just don’t like what I perceive to be many people waiting for Town’s fall. If you played here you take this very personally. It is not just HS lax here in Town; it is a way of life–not kidding. Look at the staff–they span decades of lax. Look at the crowd–same thing. Just sticking up for my boys. the truth is not what we say on these blogs but what the boys will do in the playoffs.
As to feeder programs, I know that some of the Town staff helps out in the AC and the varsity players do as well. In terms of summer programs last year Town mostly stuck together–don’t know how it went but do know they are doing it again.
and, no one here who bleeds green is thinking that world has come to an end. Marr & Co will pull this out. But don’t give me a hard time about saying no more bashing–read what you wrote: “Good news is that b/c Town is having an inconsistent season…”. Here in Greenville there is nothing “good” about inconsistency.
Facts: Last year’s team returners who made a difference in payoffs and therefore give us hope for playoffs this year: KI, Schuldt, Lieberman, Porcelli, Poritzky (new but played awesome), Mabus. These kids parked an offense when D’s keyed on Ranagan. They will do it.
green alum,
Yes I now understand how you could come to that conclusion on my words. A poor choice by me and wasn’t at all trying to ding town but rather only make a point to Lax about why he shouldn’t worry about lack of press for his team. I was too “flip” about it.
Coming from a very “young” (in terms of building a good program) Rye program relative to Town, yes I can’t appreciate the established “green” emotions of a die-hard Town fan but I understand “the drift”.
But maybe you’re a bit too hard on yourself and Town? Even the best teams can have ups and downs, upsets, etc.
Good luck to Town going forward.
Anyway, I’ll repeat what I said earlier. If Town plays the way they did vs Chaminade, they’ve certainly got the potential to win Class A.
Slacrosse: cheers bro
