Ridgefield fans should be out in full force tonight at 7 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium as the Tigers host Section 1’s Somers.
It’s the final countdown, folks.
Until the playoffs that is.
The final week of the regular season in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region is upon us.
While we’ve been talking about the seedings for weeks now, we still have some big games to play before they are officially unveiled.
Including tonight at 7 p.m. at Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow Stadium, where the defending FCIAC champion Tigers will hosts defending Section 1 Class B champion Somers.
Neither team will be at full strength, however. Ridgefield is minus Towson University-bound midfielder Kurt Mueller, who sustained an injury in a one-goal win over Wilton last week and missed the Tigers’ 14-9 loss at John Jay. Somers will be without Johns Hopkins-bound defenseman Eddie Schurr (sprained ankle), who was also out of action in the Tuskers’ 11-10 win over Montgomery (N.J.).
Of note, Somers senior midfielder Greg Petre needs one goal to reach the 100 mark for his varsity career. Petre is bound for Army, which last night picked up one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, defeating Syracuse 9-8 in double overtime in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, a game that promises to be the talk of the lax world for quite some time.
In games today in the Hudson Valley, Eastchester visits Irvington, John F. Kennedy Catholic plays at Pearl River, Scarsdale hosts Clarkstown South and Suffern visits White Plains at 4:30 p.m. At 4:15 p.m., Nanuet plays at Pelham at Glover Field.
It’s a busy day in Suffolk. East Islip visits Connetquot at 5 p.m. in a matchup of 12-3 teams. West Islip takes a 13-game win streak into its game at Northport. Also at 4 p.m., it’s West vs. East as Smithtown West (11-4) plays at Smithtown East (9-6), Sachem East visits Connetquot, Sachem East plays at Longwood, Patchogie-Medford visits North Babylon, Half Hollow Hills East hosts Middle Country and William Floyd plays at Brentwood. Commack hosts Bay Shore at 4:30 p.m.
In Connecticut action, Fairfield Warde visits Danbury at 6 p.m., Weston hosts Joel Barlow at 6:45 p.m. and New Fairfield is at Bunnell at 7 p.m.

There is still a lot that can happen, but here is one scenario….
If, Rye beats Greeley, Putnam Valley beat Brewster, Bronxville beats Irvington, Pelham wins out, Pleasantville beats Fox Lane and Briarcliff remains above .500 (whew!!!):
1. Pleasantville (67/16 = 4.1875 index) Even if they lose to Fox Lane, they will have an index of 4.0 and a 1 more win than B’ville, don’t know if that’s the tiebreaker, but if it is, they will stay 1.

In the first round, the seeds add up to 17 if there are enough teams. #1 plays #16, #2 plays 15 and so on, the bracket is laid out (in descending order) #1, 16, 9, 8, 5, 12, 13, 4, 3, 14, 11, 6, 7, 10, 15, 2. There wont be enough teams to fill out all the lines, so some teams will have byes into the next round. Connect the lines to see how the teams go after they win.
I like Ridgefield today. I can’t envision Colsey losing to three Section 1 teams, not with the talent he has to work with.

Somers’ 14-13 double-OT win over Ridgefield may have been the regular-season game of the year in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region. Somers trailed 7-2 early and Ridgefield trailed 13-11 in the closing minutes.
Somers D did get rattled early on and looked like it would be in for a long night after allowing seven first-quarter goals. But after that, the Tuskers allowed just five goals in the remaining three quarters and two OTs. Somers was minus Schurr in the one-goal win over Montgomery (NJ) on Saturday, too. Matt Cirieco played well the last two games starting in Schurr’s spot.
I thought a big key was Somers’ ability to neutralize Duncan Morrissey on faceoffs in the second half after Morrissey came out and won seven of the first 10 draws.
It’s noteworthy that Somers has picked up three one-goal wins against some strong non-section opponents in Niskayuna, Montgomery and now Ridgefield. In those games, Petre a total of 13 goals, including, as noted six tonight. He now has 105 career goals heading into the playoffs.

Where is the love for Christian Smith? They put him on #10, Ridgefield’s Towson bound middie in the 2nd half and Smith shut him down, including stripping him in OT. Also Rob Mendoza played a hell of a game, keeping #2, the Lafayette bound attackman in check from the second half onward. Tremendous game overall! Congrats Somers!

If JJ were to get 3, I’d pick Smyth, he has improved all season and is really showing how to run Schur’s defense. Very good footwork.
Morrissey did a good job at the start on faceoffs, but Deiana really pulled through for Somers, he doesn’t give up, great hustle. Congrats Somers .

Smyth and Waldman earn my vote . They both have had steller seasons and their defensive play is reason the JJ Team is currently 14-1 (McCormack has missed a lot of games due to injury)
Not sure what “rule” dictates that certain schools get set numbers, but there are some players who are worthy of consideration who are not the “third player from JJ” or “someone from PV, someone from LP” that someone posted above. Isn’t part of this supposed to be about players not teams? What about including some other great players, not from Somers, JJ, Yorktown? On this list would be McCormack Rye, Fitzgerald PV, Wood Bville, Brandofino Pac, probably a couple of others.
laxerfanm always hated that “rule” myself but it is what it is…side note, some of these box scores re: assists look a little dubious (ie, 10 goals, 10 assists)…my understanding of the correct rule is that you only get an assist when the goal scorer does NOT have to make an athletic move to shoot..any kind of dodge or fake means no assist…(another favorite is shots on goal)
great game last night for somers. petre, pfifner, deiana, and bello all really stepped up. the faceoff circle was great to watch, deiana really turned it on after they got down. overall it had to be about 50/50 or maybe even deiana by a little. petre nd pfiffner dominated offensively and bello had his will on defense.go somers!
LaxerFan agree about “rule” but the counter arguement is that the teams you mentioned (Town, JJ, Somers) tend to have much stronger strength of schedule and so if they put up comparable of better stats (I know stats are only part of the equation) they tend to get more attention. With the “down year in Sect 1” and the increase in parity I agree that more conversation is needed about quality players from the “non-power league” teams. Here are just a few names to throw out there I’m sure there are many opinions.

How come Prunty(LP) isn’t on any of these lists? IMO, he’s one of, if not the best middie in the section. Also, if Bello isn’t dinged up all year, he gets AA. He’s the best in the section when healthy.

McCormack of Rye was on the pre-season AA lists and based upon his performance, should remain on the list.
After the Greeley game tomorrow he will have played in 13 of 16 games. So he’s played in plenty of games to judge him on performance.
He has played and contributed big time despite his injury which in the early
days had to be very obvious to anyone that saw him play. One game after his
injury, he played in the 10-9 loss to Jay. After the game a Jay player paid a
good compliment about him to the (JN).
Despite playing at 60-90% of normal capacity from the start of his injury to
today (probably around 90%) he’s still roughly in the 65-70% range in FO wins.
Other then to rest him on occasion he takes all the FO’s. Just as importantly
as FO, he’s continued to be very effective in ground balls as well as making
assists and goals.
Yeah it was Pickel he said McCormack was a real warrior.
As a defensemen i played both Prunty and Honovich this season
Two great players but different
Honovich can play defense and creates Transition and gets easy offense, however isnt as useful in a six on six settled offense.
Prunty the opposite he is the best player on there offense when there settled and he can dodge, shot and score at will.

nope – not even close….Arlington isn’t getting one….you need to be beat Brewster, Mahopac, L/P, Yorktown, or John Jay – if you want to talk about getting an AA pick.

Arlington won’t get one this year, but they have an up and coming program and may get one in years to come.
Gotta say that Honovich, Prunty, Fallo, Montemerno (sp), Caffrey make up one potent offensive unit!
why does stats play a big part. Fazio and that Montemerno kid (l/P) just get it done. Not flashy just get it done under the radar.
As LAXman said about Arlington, the formula for being in the running for AA is to win many games (inc. over top comp) and have a player with clearly great skills.
Arlington is in no better or worse position then any other school in this regard.
I would say that they did put themselves in a potentially good position this season by playing some top teams. Had they won or maybe come very close then people would have naturally started really focusing on their players.

In regards to All American, its always disappointing to the stronger players on the teams that are not in the spotlight or in the top echelon of section. It is important to consider though what you are receiving All American for. If you are running around and having success against the toughest competition there is, then perhaps that is what we are looking for in an All American. Teams who do not play enough of the top competition, or teams that play it unsuccessfully, cannot have very many candidates unless there is an exception that a large majority of the community is aware of. Simply dominating weaker competition is not cause to be awarded All American, nor is it evidence, that in being faced with stronger competition, that success would be forthcoming. Sometimes, you get an absolutely awesome player on a team that is fairly ordinary in every other way and on the rare occasion you will find one on a weaker team. (Jon Hess, Nyack ’94) These players have usually made noise for a few seasons and exposed themselves to the larger community through Empire State Games, summer camps, and most notably, performing extremely well against superior teams even while the score becomes progressively lopsided. All Americans stick out. They are, by far and away, the players who impact each game they play, and they do so in a stunning fashion. Being a consistently good player game in and game out does not make you an All American, it makes you good.
Section One will fill the amount of spots alloted to it for All American. I’m sure all who receive the award will be deserving. When we predict, we should be looking at players that absolutely dominate. The logic that a “team” needs a certain amount of awards designated for the individual, based on the “team’s” achievement is misguided. One of the best lacrosse “teams” I ever saw was Garden City’s 97 team. They were undefeated 22-0, Class B State Champions and had only one All-American. All their other players were very good. They all played together, moved the ball, and beat everybody.
Matt Bocklet was one of the better defenders to play in Section One. He did not receive All-American in High School and truly should have. It did not do too much to derail his drive or his lacrosse career. In all of this, perspective is needed.

Actually not sure even an AA can be “stunning” at all times in every game but one way or another, they just stand out, don’t they!
As an example a few yrs ago Rye played Fox Lane. I had never seen Jay Lucas play and FL wasn’t a real power, like Jay. But you didn’t need his # to locate him. His speed, stick skills, shots, etc stood out dramatically!
By that measure, Kevin Interlicchio would not be an All-American. I can’t see them denying the young man this honor though. At the end of the day it’s about long-term performance, but not necessarily dominant in every appearance.

Good selections only Petre and Phiffner different.Agreed what Indian J says but sometimes the dominant player cannot be dominant in the case of face guarding.That is a compliment to that player in that the opposing coach would rather lose a defenseman than see them touch the ball.That can be put in as a criteria for AA .Sure KI, Brando and Petre as Attacks have seen that this year

I agree and was trying to say something like that in my “can’t always be stunning at all times” comment. Lacrosse is a team sport and in any particular game or season, many factors contribute to how an AA will play. As I said you can just tell by a kid’s skills that they really stand-out.
Based on his skills and performance in more games then not KI will/should be an AA.
I honestly believe that there are no AA goalies this year except for Longo.
Longo Impacts each game he plays. If he would have taken himself out of mentallity durring the Ridgefield game after being down 9-2 they would have NEVER come back. 14 saves in that game. Longo also leads the league in saves with an astonishing number compared to alot of the other goalies.

By your definition I would them have to say the John Jay defenseman Smyth meets those AA criteria. If you have caught any of their games this year, you will see that quite a number of the opposition goals are scored when this big guy was on the sidelines catching a breather. He is also the key to the unbelievable numbers they have as a man-down unit this year.
On the contra side of the arguement, he is not flashy or showy: he does not have tremendous speed like the others in his defensive unit and seems to be a very quiet guy.

Agree. Exactly waht happened to the great Dickson of Delaware being face-guarded by UNC in their recent game.
Brings up another thought. UNC has 6-8 Under Armour AA kids enrolling in Sept to join their other 20 AA’s! But what happens– Delaware almost beats them losing by 1 and Army beats Syracuse!!
Hey AA is nice to have but lots of non AA kids have great careers on very successful teams in D1-3 and club and CONGRATS TO THEM AS WELL!!!

You would be entitled to have one maybe two games that were lackluster. It’s human nature. I think though that you can still tell an AA in an “off peak” performance. Also, I am not using my criteria to eliminate or introduce any specific players from the discussion. Just pointing out that an All American is different than a very good player on a very good team or a player who does a great job for an average or weaker team. Also, “stunning” does not have to be overtly “flashy” especially if you’re inconsistent. It’s just a component that certain players have and you know it when you see it.
How many games would you have to watch Ranagan, Chris Bocklet, or Joe Marasco play before you would say “Dude, that kid is awesome.”? The “Dude” may be optional, but you get were I’m going.

Good list .I agree on all selections.Last one is tough as nobody sticks out maybe another Jay player.Town.Pac.L/P PV each have one AA that is a true AA..No goalies stick out this year.
How can you guys leave out Pfiffner – Colgate. He should be a lock for Somers.
He has been their most dynamic, consistent player all year. Team leader,
two year captain and all round player with 35 goals this season so far…
Tusker fan, I really can’t see somers getting 2 all americans, if they do it will be petre and piffner bc they are both very similar, 2 year captains and leaders but petre lead their team in goals and assists this year, that’s the only difference

Zack Waldman is going to DIII Tufts, a wonderful school both athletically and academically. Greg Smyth is going to Georgetown, however I believe he got in there based on grades and not lax, I hear he’s one of the best students in the class and his top choice was actually MIT. Both have bright futures ahead of them. As for other JJ defenders, Pickel of course is going to Hopkins and Lambert, only a freshmen, I hear is starting to get looked at by top D1 schools already. They start this process so early!

Hey maybe Smythe should try walking on as Lorfrink of Byram Hills did successfully at Gtow. Here they turned this big miiddie into a pole.
Whether Smyth and Waldman play another season or 10 seasons of lacrosse…they have worked hard, and have thrived under the “new” system and are two of the nicest young men you will meet. Both chose schools for the right reasons – the academics. Extremely intellegent – couldn’t ask for a better story…And I’m not related to either one! Best of luck to these true student-athletes.

Smyth and Waldman both didn’t play that much last year with the Savs but have always had such great footwork and more old fashion way of playing. Schurr has seen both of them improve so much and has turned them into top section 1 defenders. A great story for both of the two great yound kids.
Waldman is going to Tafts, and Smyth is going to Georgetown for academics (kids a mini einstein). Lambert, the freshman, will get a good offer from a d1 school later on. He won’t be as good as JJ’s past defenders like Ryder, or will he go to a big time school but he does have a very bright future.
