We’re now just a couple of days away from the most anticipated Saturday of the season since opening weekend.

But we have some big battles on tap today and tomorrow before that.

Let’s look at today.

In the Hudson Valley, Fox Lane is off to a surprising 6-2 start, including back-to-back 5-4 overtime wins against defending Section 1 Class C champ Put Valley as well as Pleasantville.

The Pleasantville win was a four-overtime affair — the Foxes’ fourth OT game of the year. (They have won three.) The Foxes won it on a goal by Conor Morris from 15 yards out with about a minute to go in the fourth extra period. Fox Lane goalie Cameron Stephens (who has a goal-against average of 4.4 this year) made five big saves after regulation, including a stop on a one-on-one in the third OT.

Today, the Foxes could be in store for another one-goal affair as they host Byram Hills in a 7 p.m. game at Fox Lane Memorial Stadium. Byram Hills (6-3) has wins over Rye and Horace Greeley to its credit.

Speaking of Rye, the Garnets visit John Jay in a 7 p.m. game. This rivalry has some history. In 2008, Rye snapped John Jay’s 47-game win streak vs. Section 1 teams with a 9-8 double-overtime win in 2008. It’s the teams’ second meeting of the season. Earlier this season, John Jay built a big lead before seeing Rye battle back before the Indians prevailed 11-10.

That was the scenario in the first meeting of the season between Horace Greeley and Somers, with Greeley leading big in the second half and Somers battling back to win a one-goal game, this one 10-9. The teams’ rematch is at 6:30 p.m. at Somers.

Arlington is off to an unbeaten start under former Yorktown standout Donny Connolly. If the Admirals remain unbeaten after their game today, it will be one of the biggest stories in Section 1 lax in a while. Arlington hosts Connolly’s alma mater, Yorktown, at 5:15 p.m.

At 7 p.m., Bronxville, which is off to an 8-2 start, hosts Iona Prep at 7 p.m. The Gaels are also 8-2, with a win over defending Section 1 Class B champs Somers on their resume.

In the CHSAA, Chaminade meets Holy Trinity, St. Anthony’s faces St. John the Baptist and Mount St. Michael faces Stepinac at 4:15 p.m.

In 4:30 p.m. Section 1 games, White Plains hosts Mahopac in a rematch of a game last year won by White Plains. Also, Harrison hosts Westlake, Hen Hud visits Haldane, Wappingers is at Brewster, Ossining is at Put Valley, Peekskill hosts Croton-Harmon and John F. Kennedy Catholic visits North Salem.

In a Westchester vs. Fairfield game, Mamaroneck visits Fairfield Ludlowe at 4:30 p.m.

A quick note for those gearing up for Saturday’s Murphy Cup, don’t forget about the annual Yorktown lacrosse fundraiser at Murphy’s in Yorktown. It will be on Friday (April 30) from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. For more info, click here.

Today’s Connecticut slate is highlighted by the crosstown showdown between Greenwich rivals Brunswick and host Greenwick at Cardinal Stadium. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Last year’s FCIAC finalists, Darien and Ridgefield, are also in action. Darien visits Westhill at 4:30 p.m. and Ridgefield plays at Norwalk in a 6 p.m. game at Testa Field.

On Long Island today, West Islip visits Babylon, Sachem North is at Longwood, Middle Country visits Copiague, Sachem East is at Brentwood and Half Hollow Hills East hosts East Islip in 4 p.m. games in Suffolk. At 4:30 p.m., Patchogue-Medford visits Bay Shore, Kings Park is at Portledge, North Babylon hosts Smithtown East and Lindenhurst is at Commack. Smithtown East visits North Babylon at 4:30 p.m., Walt Whitman hosts Riverhead at 4:45 p.m. and Northport visits Smithtown West at 6 p.m.

In Nassau, Bethpage hosts Great Neck South at 7 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. Herricks visits Malverine and at 4 p.m. Lawrence hosts Valley Stream Central.

As I said earlier….The Arlington Admiral Family gives a warm welcome to the Yorktown players, family and fans.It should be a great day regardless of the final score, let’s all relax and have a good time.

  2. Old Rugger says:

    FL 9 BH 8
JJ 10 Rye 9 (JJ hasn’t blown away anyone but a down Brewter this year)
Somers 12 HG 6 (Somers will start to play with Discipline)
Town 17 Arlington 5 (3 years from now this will be a solid game)
Iona 10 Bville 8 (Near & Mc not enough)
Pac 14 WP 6 (Pac takes revenge from last year)
    Harrison 12, Westlake 6
Hen Hud 13, Haldane 5 (I would pick HH by more but offense not really klicking)
    Brewster 10, Wappingers 9
    Croton H 19, Peekskil 5
Kennedy 6, NS 5 OT (If Trodden is healthy otherwise reverse score)
    PV 9 Ossining 7

  3. The Dutch says:

If Arlington keeps this within double digits by halftime, without liberal substitution
by Yorktown, it will be a step in the right direction. Go Admirals.

  4. JJlLax Alum says:

I think tonight will be JJ’s coming out party …. Mike Bocklet has had about 2 weeks with the offense, the middies are getting somewhat healthy, expect to see them start to click. The D has looked great the past few games seems to have Coach Schurr’s zone, coverage and slide packages down very well now. Great time to start coming together for the playoffs

  5. scooter says:

    JJ 13 Rye 9
    Mahopac 13 WP 8
    Town 17 Arlington 4
    Somers 10 HG 8

  6. Lax4Fun says:

    Joe,

As I mentioned the other day, With NO dis-respect to the Arlington players and fans. I just don’t see how this game is close? Town 16-5. Dave seems to have Towns heads pointed in the right direction. They are playing as a TEAM. I am interested to see how Town will play the final 4to 5 games they have. Ofcourse L/P is on tap this weekend. But in the next couple of weeks they have to play Ridgefield, Darien, Wilton. And St Anthonys. Theese games in my opinion will let us know what type of team Town will have going into the Sec 1Tournament. What do you think.

  7. Indian J says:

    JJlLax Alum,

I hope your logic holds true. This is an important point in the season for Purple Town and the team just needs to rise to the occasion. Rye will be ready and definitely thinking upset all the way. Rye is well coached and can really gain some control if they are successful on FO. Jay has the ability to win 13-5. Lets see what transpires ..

Foxes will need OT again. If not, they will lose.

    Somers 11 Greely 8

    Mahopac 13 White Plains 4

    Yorktown 15 Arlington 3

    Brewster 18 Wappingers 5

  8. Joe Lombardi says:

    Lax4Fun –

No question about it. Arlington is off to a great start and the future is very promising. But right now, it’s not realistic to expect the Admirals to beat Yorktown. As I noted, if somehow, someway it happens, it would be one of the bigger stories in Section 1 in a long time. Yorktown is obviously a heavy favorite and should win very comfortably.

  9. Lessonlax says:

    Quakers revenge. Greeley 12. Somers 9. JJ 11. Rye 7. Byram 8. Foxes 5. Town 15. Arling 6.
    Mahopac 13. Wh Plains 7

  10. slacrosse says:

    Town over Arlington 15-5
    Somers over HG 12-6
    Byram over FL 8-7
    Pac over WP 12-4
    IP over Bville 9-8
Jay a solid favorite over Rye

  11. Casual observer says:

should be a good game for IP bxville today. should be alot closer than recent contests with iona pulling away at the end. im taking ip-12 bville-9

  12. slacrosse says:

    ahslax

Hey stop trying to “butter up” Town so they’ll keep the score down!!

    Just kidding!! Good comment.

  13. P&G says:

This is more appropriate for a cold winters day discussion – but it will take more than 3 years for Arlington to compete at the top of Section 1. I mentioned this weeks ago, but the combination of a youth program with countless kids is only part of the equation.

The real key is having qualified coaches. No disrespect to anyone coaching youth lax, but I feel the reason that Yorktown and now John Jay are always near the top of the section, is the quality of their youth coaches. Successful players – that learn to be successful coaches. Why does Manhasset as a “small” school, consistently turn out talented teams? Ask someone from the Island, the number 1 reason mentioned would be the quality of the coaching.

With that said, I love with whats going on up in Arlington (they are on the right track), but lets just not get ahead of ourselves.

  14. Doid23 says:

Well, J better start putting it together soon, or this season may end in the sectionals. Need to see them beat Rye by 5+ to start believing they have a run in them.

As to Town, if they can lose 1 out of the stretch of 5 (L/P, Wilton, Darien, St. A, Ridgefield), they will have done well. If they can win all 5 (certainly doable), then they’ve got a chance to make some noise come playoff time.

Bryam over FL by 4, Somers over Greeley by 4, Town 10+ over Arlington.

  15. slacrosse says:

Rye/J at 7 tonight . Not 5 PM as noted by JN

  16. The Dutch says:

The key to making a program great is getting and keeping your best athletes in that program along with great coaching at the youth level. For years the best athletes in Arlington have started with soccer at a young age and stuck with it through high school. That is why they are so successful in soccer. If the lacrosse program can get the top notch athletes to start young and stay with the sport they will become relevant fairly quickly. Their youth programs are competitive with all the good programs in Putnam/ Westchester. 3 years and they will be very competitive at the varsity level.

  17. daslax says:

    Somers 11 – HG 7
    JJ 13 – Rye 10
    FL 10 – Byram 9
    Pac 12 – WP 6
    Ytown 14 – Arlington 4

  18. Youth Lax says:

P&G, I agree 100% with your comments but have to ask the question who are the quality youth, and JV coaches at y-town?

Now a days with the emergence of camps, summer leagues, and travel teams youth lacrosse has become a business. Many of the “quality” coaches run camps and select teams rather then donate time to coach volunteer youth teams. I think the best idea start up programs can do is to encourage their young players to participate in these alternative leagues and teams so they can play with future JJ, town and L/P studs and hopefully become one themselves. Every school has athletes, however not many schools have athletic kids who have had a stick in their hand playing lacrosse since the 4th grade and who understand the game of lacrosse. Aside from experience kids will also gain confidence knowing they have already played with or against players from the top tier programs and are either just as good or maybe better. I often wonder how big of a role intimidation plays when mid level programs play against the top tier programs?

  19. rake says:

North Salem 16 Kennedy 4 last game was a fluke that ns won 6-4

  20. syracuse says:

I’ve been asked to try to break down Yorktown-Arlington, so here goes:

Some have suggested Yorktown could look past Arlington to the Murphy Cup game. I don’t see it. Then again, Arlington, though clearly vastly improved, is a work in progress that won’t see serious results for at least the next 2-3 years.

But don’t for a second think the Admirals don’t have players or the right plan. Clearly, Coach Connolly has something going on over there. Arlington has SEVERAL players that could start or see significant time for the best Section 1 programs, including Yorktown and John Jay.

Jesse Troy is an outstanding close defenseman, maybe on the short list for top honors in the entire section. Many don’t know about him, but I’ve seen him and I can tell you straight out he will, at times, give Interlicchio fits, much like John Bello of Somers did the other night.

The problem for Troy and Arlington is KI is basically effective from anywhere in the offensive half. Even worse for them is the fact that Yorktown now has depth at attack beyond Remy Lieberman. Mariano and Gately are nice players and definitely guys who will have some say in how far Yorktown ultimately goes.

While Troy is Arlington’s shut-down option, Pat Sunday is the free-wheeler, a player with size, speed, stick skills and a nose for the ball on both ends of the field. Where Connolly puts him will be intriguing in that he can cover middies and attackmen and lead the break.

But, like with attack assignments, covering Yorktown’s midfield is now a big headache. The Huskers have been criticized in past years for being too reliant on a limited number of true “stars” and for getting away from team play. Well, that’s not a problem this year because even if KI is being limited, Town can come at you with a bunch of guys who can score, dish and keep possessions alive. Yorktown’s midfield is now very deep beyond Mabus and Schuldt. McLee has emerged. Fusco is really good. Arlington has Dan Arket, a very good player in his own right, but he’s the face of the midfield with a supporting cast that’s just starting to find its way.

I’m leaving someone out, but just know with Town’s spacing in the 6-v-6 set and less of a reliance on KI, it can now score more consistently than in the past.

All that said, the most intriguing aspect of today’s game will be how Arlington’s solid attack will do against Yorktown’s young defense. If you don’t know the trio of Zack Basso (No. 7), Pat Boyle (21) and Brandon Opitz (19), pay close attention today because this is a cohesive unit made up of players who, like with Troy and Sunday, would see significant time for the top programs in Section 1. They always seem to know where each other are in the half-field offense, on the break and especially on man-up. They are a joy to watch toss the ball around and they are each deadly accurate as shooters. It all comes from playing together for years on youth and modified teams. Yes, Dutchess County has feeder programs, pretty good ones, too.

Yorktown goalie Derek Koelsch will be tested, rest assured. Steve Burke will have his hands full with someone, or maybe multiple guys.

In the end though, Yorktown is much better than its 3-loss record and Arlington isn’t as good as its unblemished mark. I expect a highly entertaining game at times, but ultimately Town’s lax IQ will trump Arlington’s developing lax IQ, somewhere in the neighborhood of 14-6 or 15-7.

    Enjoy the game.

  21. Youth Lax_fan says:

    P&G that’s an excellent post.

Syracuse, your post is good too, but a bit too long. Cut it down so it fits into a half hour and we’ll have it on the air asap. lol. It’s a very good summary.

    BUT

Can we please stop the pandering to Arlington?

Yorktown 17 Arlington 3 (8 if Marr substitutes)

They are two programs that are light years apart and at the end of the day, Arlington is no further along than many of the other mid-tier programs in the section…Horace Greeley, Fox Lane, Brewster, Ossining, Byram Hills, Mamaroneck, Pelham, White Plains and ten others. This team has played one team from Section One that has higher than an 82 power ranking. 82! Their SOS is almost dead last meaning the easiest schedule in the section. hello?

It’s great that they hired a coach whom the kids all like. It’s great that they put some plays in on offense, but to think for a second that their 8-0 record is going to help them against the potential section champs is wishful thinking.

It’s great that they are so enthusiastic, but that doesn’t mean we have to preface everything we say here with ‘how they are a program on the move!’ We’ll find out by the end of the season and I’m sure coach Connolly would be first to agree.

    …this is perfect lax weather.

  22. Indian J says:

This is indeed perfect Lax weather. Kids on every program are luck today.

  23. Lax4Fun says:

Any updates yet on any of the great games today?

  24. Sec1 says:

  25. Lax4Fun says:

Any updates yet, Great weather, great comments great games. Who could ask for more.

  26. Sec1 says:

Town 5 Arl 2 Arl playing hard and giving good effort, Town sloppy and going through the motions

  27. Syracuse says:

    Youth Lax_Fan,

Just keep in mind Arlington has never been good at lacrosse, while many of the other schools you mentioned have had some moments in the past, albeit not championship ones.

  28. Sec1 says:

Town 9 Arl 2 end of 3, Town can’t be happy with this, Arl playing hard

  29. Syracuse says:

Town can’t be happy if it is playing poorly by its own lofty standards, but I’m telling you Arlington is not a doormat.

  30. Sec1 says:

Town 10 Arl 3 Final. Arl not bad

  31. Joe Lombardi says:

In a game with huge selection seeding implications, Somers leads Greeley 4-2 after one quarter. Four players have goals for Somers. Dan Leventhal has both goals for Greeley.

  32. D-Pac says:

Just got back from the Mahopac/ White Plains game. 13-10 Mahopac. Pac didn’t wake up until the second half. Once they used their speed and drove to the net, Plains couldn’t stop them. Big problem for Pac was their D. No cohesiveness. McGuigan kept them in the game with his point blank saves. Pac continues to not use the body. At times they gave up some ugly goals. They stalled up three with three minutes to go , I think in part that they didn’t have faith that their D could stop them much longer. Need to get their act together for Arlington next Thursday, or it will be a long day. A week layoff again will hurt.,

  33. Syracuse says:

I want to see Arlington play Mahopac and Lakeland/Panas. To me, there’s nothing wrong with using those two teams and results of those games as the true barometer of where the Admirals stand.

  34. rake says:

    jj updates please!!!

  35. Joe Lombardi says:

Somers leads 7-3 at the half. Kieran Donohue has three goals.

  36. Lax33 says:

Yorktown 9 Arlington 3. Much better game then I had expected. Interliccio didn’t come out until 3 minutes to go in the game, and Y-town was trying to increase the margain but couldn’t do it. While it certainly wasn’t Yorktowns best game, it wasn’t bad. Arlington played outstanding. They had a kid named Jeannotte covering Interliccio, and shut him down. I’m not sure who the kid is but he covered Interliccio better than anyone else this year. I think he had one assist, no goals maybe? Yorktown had a few shots that could have gone in, but so did Arlington. Two younger players on Arlington impressed me as well as Jeannotte (a junior) Arket (sophomore) played phenominal alongside Lindsey (sophomore) This Arlington team looks headed in the right direction. They need a solid lefty attack, and maybe a little more help in the net. But rumor has it that Joe Colarusso’s boy J.D. (freshman) played the beginning of the season before breaking his collarbone. With this youth, a year or two will do wonders for this program. But overall the better team wins, I can’t wait to watch us play Lakeland next. Our attack played decent, the middies played well and the defense looked okay. Lets go Y-town

  37. Cards Lax says:

Greenwich breaks down in the second half once again…

  38. Sec1 fan says:

Mamaroneck in a big 6-5 win over Fairfield Ludlowe. Mamaroneck looks for real this year.

  39. admirals says:

    Wow,
we should have played better and finished and we would have been a better game. Y-town is not as tough as they once were. The rest of the section watch out for us. Wappingers u guys got killed by brewster? that team is a joke and we are goin to murder you. nuff said y-town great game

  40. Joe Lombardi says:

Somers has opened up a 13-3 lead after three quarters vs. Greeley. Donohue has 4-2. Kevin Cousin has 3-1.

  41. Bear says:

    Brewster 14- Wappingers- 7

  42. Pull your post says:

    Youth Lax-Fan,
You might want to pull your post. Nostradamus, you are not! As mentioned before…Arlington is on the right track..it is because of coaching, hard work and a desire to compete with the elite programs like Yorktown. Pandering is a great SAT word, just not applicable to what people are going to continue to say about Arlington as they continue to improve.

  43. Bear says:

Sec1 fan, I agree about Mamaroneck. That sound’s like a great win!

  44. Indian J says:

Any news about Rye and Jay?

  45. Sec1 says:

    JJ 8-4 3:47 leftt

  46. Old Rugger says:

Any news on JJ Rye or NS Kennedy?

  47. greenpiece says:

Had to happen. Town had a little let down. These kids are still playing well even with today’s slow pace, sloppy play. The result was never in doubt. Porcelli and Sullivan looked very good on faceoffs–finally. Mabus contributed some g’s too. Def played solid. Though KI didn’t score, the attack held its own with Lieberman having 3 and Mariano netting 2–again. Mabus 2, Fusco (again) 1 and Porcelli (again) 1. Koelsch had some nice saves. Arlington is well coached. Their knowledge of the game went up big time since last year. They had a very definite Defensive plan that worked.

  48. rake says:

  52. Indian J says:

Anyone who was at the Jay game have a description of events? Another “W” but was it a complete “W” ? We will have to hear from those who were present. Good Job Jay. Keep it up … maybe add a little to it also

  53. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final – Somers 14, Greeley7

  54. D-Pac says:

lax 123. What game were you watching? The Mahopac D was horrible. They were out of position so many times and left men wide open down low. Against a stronger attack team like Arlington and Lakeland, they are going to have major problems. To win those games they need their offense to keep possession and score at least 14 goals. Pac usually starts off games slow and today was a perfect example going down 5-1 after the first quarter. If they do that against Arlington and Lakeland it will be hard to come back. Those teams have a much better defense than White Plains.

  55. lax9 says:

For all the experts in lacrosse that write on this blog, I am an Alumni from Yorktown ,can the Yorktown lovers , just admit once that maybe the other team played good enough to make Yorktown play bad. Does anybody from Yorktown ever play bad. Surely there has to be games thta just maybe the other team played well. I mean my god, KI was shut down period. Arlington played good enough to take Yorktown off there game period.

  56. thistime says:

Interlicchio was face guarded all game and just kinda stood on the crease and watched his teamates take care of business….He didnt even play the 4th quarter…

  57. LaxMom! says:

Great game ARLINGTON you played your hearts out! I’m sure everyone was shocked that the score was so low considering the predictions! Glad you disappointed them all!

  58. laxing says:

Fox Lane 8-2 over Byram Hills… Solid win for FL as they seem to be creeping up on everyone.. even better than jj against BH

  59. Bigeasy says:

Arlington played decent. Decent athletes. Goalie played real well, he had five or six kick saves from what I could tell. Town looked like it really did not seem too pumped up. Looking to LP but Arlington deserves some credit. KI was faceguarded the whole game and did not play most of the 3rd and all of the 4th. Seemed like they rested him the 2nd half. Arlington improved greatly from last year but it could easily been a 14-3 game. They are not a real threat this year to LP or Town but could surprise some others. They are no longer a pushover and will contend if they keep this up in the future. Lax IQ is key for they were still subbing randomly at times and sending guys off during quick whistles. For my 3rd time watching them, impressed. Murph Cup should be fun on Saturday. I see Town by 7 still, something tells me they will meet in sectionals and it will be much closer. Just my two cents.

  60. laxx7 says:

  64. LacrosseInsider says:

John Jay dominated play in the first half, they controlled the ball, were patient on offense and played great D. At the half I believe the score was 5-1 Jay. In the second half Jay still played well but Rye picked it up a bit. If Jay played the second half with the same dominance as the first half the score would have been more like12 -2. But let me be clear, this was not the typical Jay blows it in the second half and then pulls out the win. There was a constant 3 – 4 goal cushion, it just didn’t turn into a rout that all the critics have been looking for – this team is starting to play real well together and they are improving every game. Rye looked like a well coached group of younger players but they were over matched today,,,,I am sure they will get better in time. Overall a very good game for Jay, big test on Saturday at Syosset under the lights….

  65. Youth Lax_fan says:

I’m not pulling anything, Pull your post.

Arlington got drubbed and I had half the score right! lol.

    Keep trying!

  66. Observer says:

    Two questions …

    * Who do we like for Section One Coach of the Year? Top contenders have to be Timmy Schurr #1 and Donny Connolly #2. (Let’s not forget JJ was a .500 team last year!)

    * Who do we like Tuesday in Somers-JJ Round 2? Other than the slip up vs Town, Somers looks like they’re a new team.

  67. laxallday says:

    for jj rye,

jj came out much hotter than rye and got out to a 4-0 lead in the first qaurter. the rest of the game was pretty even and rye has yet to play a full game of lacrosse. daniello played well but was covered pretty well by collins. jjs ride shut down rye for most of the game. ryes offense clicked at moments and barton set up a ton of looks that werent cashed in. jays offense was clearly run through daniello.

    LacrosseInsider,

Excellent analysis. Rye fields only three seniors and were in fact overmatched by a talented John Jay team.

  69. T.B.Toad says:

    Observer –

Let’s not forget that Fox lane was 3-12 last year. Coach of the Year is wide open!

    Give the Foxes some love.

  70. Indian J says:

Jay may field 4-5 seniors including the two goalies.

    Pickel
    Smyth
    Fletcher
    Maher

    any other senior starters ?

  71. Laximus says:

Excellent point about Vazzano at Fox Lane. Right now they would be seeded higher than Somers. That’s quite a feat! Having said that Schurr has given John Jay stability and smarts. As someone pointed out the other day, a brilliant hire for John Jay.

  72. Freshmen says:

Tommy beck stepped up to the plate and scored two goals for J. He will be on the field for the next four years. This childs going places. In other news though Eric Newman will not be playing due to an internship offered by Tony Stark. He has accepted and will be seen in Iron man 2.

  73. Freshmen says:

    William Odonald starts

  74. LacrosseInsider says:

Indian J – my point was that Rye has young less experienced players. Jay’s young guys are already experienced.

  75. Freshmen says:

    zack waldman

  76. IPpy Lax says:

Iona Prep outlasts Bronxville 10-9 under the lights at Bronxville! Score a bit misleading… The Gaels were up 10-5 after three…

Steve Trizano 4-0, Pete De Salvo 3-2 for IP…

  77. scooter says:

If Pac wants to make the section finals, they really need to tighten up the D. We all knew coming in to the season that they were going to have a good offense and they were going to have to outscore people. They’ve been able to do that against the middle of the pack teams and Somers, and teams are finally trying to stop Brando from beating them. I heard he was shutoff and only had 1-1 and yet the middies picked up there game led by Okie’s 2-4, Chase had 3 goals and TJ Foley scored 3 and he has already doubled his total goals from last season.

Lakeland is going to be the telling game because last year it was the Tyler Perrelle show on offense when he played a role in all 6 of Pacs goals in the section semis loss. Also, congrats to Arlington for giving Town a great fight. I believe it’s great for the section to have another rising power to go along with Bronxville in Class C.

  78. laxx7 says:

isnt mamo class a not b?

  79. Indian J says:

    Lacrosse Insider,

Not being argumentative, just pointing out that both teams are similar in regards to contributing seniors. Rye I’m sure will be much stronger next year with what they are bringing back.

  80. fl-bh says:

Impressive win for Fox lane,.. Byram was up 1-0 at half—it was all defense and goalies in first half…3-2 FL at 3Q..really tight game with big night crowd. 4Q was all Foxes. Fox Lane with 6 straight goals including two late when BH was doubling ball at end. FL tremendous effort defensively not allow BH anything inside.

  81. laxx7 says:

but the school is prob around 1200-1400 kids so isnt that class a?

  82. LacrosseInsider says:

Indian J – agree completely. Also agree with the comment about Tommy Beck – Super impressive freshman with quick feet and a nice stick, reminds me a lot of a young Mike Daniello.

  83. Freshmen says:

next year Js whole team will be seniors except for the two freshmen that capture the hearts of the fans

  84. SWLAX says:

First of all, the game was played at a neutral site, not @ Bronxville. Second, how is the score a bit misleading? The game is four quarters long, the score after three doesn’t matter. Iona didn’t pull their starters, nothing misleading about it.
B’Ville got there act together in the second half (once they got used to playing at the faster pace that Iona plays, which, sad to say, is a result of the league B’Ville plays in where they are not used to that pace) and outplayed Iona. If you want to take away the fourth quarter, take away the second quarter as well, the one that B’Ville played poorly in. End result is the same, B’Ville lost by one.

  85. Pac lax says:

Well said Scooter. The Pac’s D looks very weak this yr. The O puts up 10-12 pts a game but the D gives up 10. I know they are young but In the playoffs D wins Championships and if this trend continues I can’t see them going very far.

  86. JJ-Lax Alum says:

    Indian J ,

    JJ Starts 5 seniors ,

    O’Donnell – Middie
    Pickel – LSM
    Smyth – Defense
    Waldman Defense

    Franklin – Goalie
    Maher – Goalie

All of these players are key contributers to JJ’s successful 9-1 record

  87. P&G says:

Insider – not to nitpick, but I don’t think I agree with the Beck/Daniello comparison. Right about the ultra-quick feet, nice stick and nothing seems to faze him. We thought he would be good – but not this good. Not as strong as Daniello, not as hard of a shot – but a nice valuable piece of the puzzle going forward. A better offensive version of Harrison Silver? Hard to project with a freshman.

  88. scooter says:

    Pac Lax
I wouldn’t say weak. I would chalk some of it to inexperience because none of the starters played on varsity last season (Brereton broke his wrist during football). Plus if anyone can turn the unit around it’s Corace. He’s one of the best in the business

  89. LacrosseInsider says:

P&G – you may be right…..hard to say as a freshman but I do think he will be a great player. Not really fair to compare him to anyone really.

  90. D-Pac says:

Dead on , Scooter and Pac Lax. I don’t know if the D can turn it around by sectionals. It is enough time, but I don’t know if the players have it in them. It seems nobody on D likes to give the body. Very rare to see the other teams players kissing the carpet. They really have to step it up, but you can only teach so much, they have to have it in them. Okie, one of the smallest players on the team, is their best hitter and he is a middie. White Plains didn’t have any big attackmen, yet had no problem taking it to the net. Wait til Put valley comes a callin. STEP IT UP “D”!

  91. Doid23 says:

Hmmm, some surprises. Looks like the Foxes are for real, Rye hangs tough, Jay good but not very good. Somers putting one on Greeley, Somers-Jay rematch should be a good one. Town? Well, letdown game after Chaminade and before Murphy, but props to Arlington. After getting run off the field vs. Town last year, seems like they took great steps. I consider keeping the spread under 10 a good result.

  92. slacrosse says:

    Rye/Jay Game

    Congrats to Jay.

Rye was beaten by a well disciplined team who played all basic phases of the game well for both halves. Both J goalies were solid and Diniello ran the O well with good distribution.

Generally Rye had real issues all game with ground balls and in the 1st Q, clearing.

Most glaring was 1st Q when Rye let J totally control possession as Rye had real problems clearing the ball, making many unforced errors in this phase. Rye may have had the ball only TWICE in their O zone in the 1st Q which obviously deprived them of potential scoring opportunities.

Respect “Lacrosseinsider” opinions but disagree in a few comments. Jay DID NOT “control” the 1st half, just the 1st Q. The rest of the game was fairly equal with Jay’s better basic skills on O and D keeping them always ahead by 2-4 goals.

“Lacrosseinsider” also said that “IF jay had dominated the second half ………..score would have been more like 12-2.” I dont personally think the ‘IF” scenarios are productive. * IF * Rye had more then two possession in their offensive zone the 1st Q, they probably would have scored more in that Q. “IF” Rye had played the way they played in the “good” half of the last Jay game or”good” half of the PV game, tonight’s game would have been closer. BUT JAY AND RYE DID NEITHER so better to stick with what actually took place. Better play by Jay the whole game, terrible 1st Q for Rye: 8-4 Jay win.

I thought Rye’s pole #16, Collins (usually plays DM) did a a very solid job covering Daniello and held down his scoring attempts. But as I said earlier I was really impressed with Daniello’s patiently running the O with great distribution.

Continued good luck Jay going forward.

  93. slacrosse says:

    admirals, ahs

“admirals”, you said “let me be the first to say Arlington would beat Town” . I replied that you would also be the “last” person to make this prediction.

“ahs”. Your “where was Mr. Hopkins today” comment was an unnecessary (and innacurate) “dis”.

Either say nothing and let Arlington’s results speak for themselves or if you have to say something keep it positive (or negative) about how Arliington played and not negative on the other team or player.

  94. slacrosse says:

    Admirals

Meant to put in that you made the Arlington win prediction on the L Hud Lacrosse blog.

  95. P&G says:

funny how this blog creates virtual relationships…was looking in the stands for you, and other bloggers…we might need a Lombardi Convention.

  96. B-Class says:

Is that true Seeds for B would be
    1- JJ
    2-Fox Lane
    3- Mamaroneck
    4- Somers

This would have Somers and JJ in the Semis. That would be an injustice. I know the process point system is new. But how about strength of schedule????
And does not look like it would change if you look at the rest of the schedule.

As far as JJ- Somers on Tuesday. Set up for a nice rematch, both teams have improved since the last meeting. JJ offense very patient , and rest of team playing very disciplined.
Somers , offense moving the ball better, clearing and defense have improved a lot!!. I would say though that Somers goalies have looked very shaky as of late. JJ goalies very solid. this may come down to the deciding factor.

  97. gimme a stick says:

I watched the Iona vs. Bronxville game, it was very good. I can’t help but be impressed by B’ville (I’ve now seen 3 of their games loss to Fordham, win vs. Eastchester included) they run a very patient offense and handle the ball as well as any team I’ve seen this year, including the LI powerhouses. I also think they ride very well. I think they have four standouts, 10, 2, 15, and 8, (not sure of the names, McCormack, Near, Woods, and ?) I defensively you need to spread them out to have success, FP did it, Iona did it, EHS did not. Do I think Iona was the better team? Yes, however the B’ville players showed me something clawing their way back into that game, and an outrageous TO call by an official almost caused this one to go into OT. Iona let down for some reason in this one, I was surprised they let B’ville back in it it appeared to be well on the way to a blow out at one point. 11, 1, 5, and 2 (Trizano, Castellano, Borselino, and Desalvo) all looked good for Iona.

  98. ahslax says:

It was good to see the turn out in the stands yesterday for both the home team and Yorktown!!! I thought our defense did a great job.

  99. JJ-Lax Alum says:

Two marked improvements on JJ’s overall game last night that I am suprised that no one has mentioned :

    – how well JJ did last night on Face Off’s, it seems as though Coach Schurr had a new approach with 2 long poles on the wing each time.

    – how aggresive and what good defense the JJ middies played, specifically Walter, O’Donnell, Chen and Beck . I would say Rye had 3 or 4 “failure to advance” calls on them and the J middies and defense men were constantly knocking the ball out of the Rye sticks.

  100. Old Rugger says:

Indian J and Lax Insider besides Tommy Beck (T MO) don’t forget the other freshmen Jack Lambert both have very high Lax IQs and will be fun to watch for the next 3.5 years.
With the Fox Lane turnaround I think their Coach should be up there for coach of the year, early still but nice job so far. (sorry to say I had written them off)
Well done Admirals the score speaks for itself. Town could not blow them away because they are good enough not to get blown away. People have good games bad games (I could cry about the JJ Sett game but why) the score is the score. As parcells said your record is who you are and the score is who you are, while I love this blog and talkin all the Lax BS the games are the reality once again Arlington welcome to the conversation, great game.

  101. no one says:

arlington played aggressively, yorktown was very sloppy, often giving the ball right over to arlingtons speedy middies. don’t know where everyone thought this would be a double digit win for town. still a few things to consider, arlington has been racking up tons of goals in all of their games. only got 3 against town, seems that in and of itself is the tell tale of the difference of these teams, and one aspect being overlooked. when a team is avering greater then 12 g/game and can only get 3, well seems that they were effectively shut down. holding town to 9 goals, could be considered a very good job and it was. still all in all, to paraphrase what a lot of jj bloggers have said about the season, a win is a win, be it ugly or not.

  102. pointingout says:

    b-class-

i agree that when you say John Jays goalies are looking solid, but Somers goalie looking shakey? Longo is playin very well, yes there are shots that he could have had BUT your not going to beat any of the top names such as John Jay and Yorktown with only 7-8 goals…just not going to happen. I believe Longo had 25-27 saves against St. Ants this year which is very impressive. Longo and McGuigan (from Mahopac) are AA cannidates

  103. ahslax says:

I think you are going to continue to see significant improvements in AHS Lax. We have more kids playing on good summer teams this year Superstars/West Rock to name a couple. Our youth league is also getting stronger for example our little 7th grade team has already played 17 games so far this season and their coach is super dedicated and high on the lax IQ. Yesterday was a testament to Connolly, Steve and Colarusso’s work with our kids. I hope Connolly is considered for Coach of the year, considering the program he came into and the improvements he has made in less than 2 months, it’s remarkable. I think yesterday that Arlington earned some respect and that is a good thing. We play Copaige tomorrow anyone know anything about them?

  104. ahslax says:

Prepare to see significant and continued improvements from AHS. We have more kids playing Superstar/West Rock than we ever have. As for our youth league our 7th graders, for example, have already played 17 games this season, their coach is super dedicated and there is a lot of talent there and many also are playing Superstars/Bombers. Well tomorrow we play Copaige anyone know anything about them?

  105. slacrosse says:

    JJ-Lax Alum

Yes having quality poles like Pickel at wing was productive and they did pick up a couple of ground balls coming out of FO. But the FO count was still 11-16 for Rye with Cole winning most of them himself. He gave Rye good possession and offensive opportunities but ya have to convert.

Yes, J’s middies and D did a good job in contributing to Rye’s clearing issues in the 1st Q. (stripping and ground balls). But there were also too many instances where Rye made the wrong pass, etc., etc. even when they were not under close J pressure. Those repeated “failure to advance” calls in the 1st Q just sapped the offensive life out of Rye during that period.

As for Rye, after the 1st Q, I felt they settled down and played good D. But Jay was patient , moved the ball very well and just found the opportunities to score. After Q1 thought Rye’s O had enough possession, chances to score, and some good SOG. J’s D was good and their goalies played well.

  106. Just sayin says:

    I dk bout that

  107. P&G says:

    Slacrosse,

I think JJ-Lax’s Alum’s point was that 11 out of 27 for John Jay was 9 more possessions for JJ compared to the first meeting. McCormack is exceptional, but credit the JJ coaches for the adjustment.

  108. ahslax says:

woops sorry for the double post

  109. slacrosse says:

    P&G

Absolutely. It was a great coaching for Schurr to use his quality poles to try and scoop up some ground balls on FO situations.

  110. JLL says:

I agree Longo does not seem as steady as last year. JJ has also polished up the Zone. Should be interesting Tues. Let’s see who has made adjustments.

  111. slacrosse says:

Schurr’s defensive sets (inc zone) for J was good coaching as well.

  112. LaxScout says:

    slacrosse, JJ-Lax alumJLL and P&G,

Agree with all of your comments.

What is amazing is that so little press/blog coverage has been given the 4 primary poles on the JJ defense . I think they have been a very strong unit, they have been strong & steady throughout the process, and have progressed and improved as they have learned the more complicated Schurr defensive package and zones, nothing like what JJ has played in the past.

  113. Lax123 says:

Pac coaches deserve credit by utilizing the faceguard on Brando to teams advantage.Brando unselfishly using defender as a pick many times to pick his own teamate off behind cage opening lanes for other scorers. Show that shutoff of your best player does not necessarily work when you have other scoring options.Kudos to all.

  114. 1st Hand Observer says:

I think some notable observations about yesterday’s game was that the Arlington Defense played well and received solid goalie play. They still gave up 3-4 goals off of non or late slides. Those will come in time. Both offensive sides of the ball did not play their best and both should have scored 4-5 more goals In my opiniont. I think the reason that Arlington fans are excited is that last year they were down 13 goals after liberal subbing at the half. yesterday, they were down 3. Last year they lost by 20 which could have been 30 without Marr pulling the plug in the 4th. This year they lost by 6. That is a 14 goal difference. For the post about KI getting pulled it was late in the game and he was pulled because marr was not happy at all with his efforts. It was not to rest him. Other then a few posts here or there I don’t think the Arlington lax community is saying anything other then we are improving, we are excited and we are having fun watching our team have some success. With a very difficult 2nd half there will be more losses and that’s okay. Remember the total number of wins in last years regular season was 7. They already have 8. For the post about Arlington youth, the current 9th grade class played over 30 games last summer and had 2 losses while beating jay, somers, town, etc along the way. The current 7th grade team is experiencing similar success. No predictions, but the future is looking bright. The program is years(maybe not as far as a few believe) away but should be getting better every year and isn’t that what high school sports are all about? Good luck to all teams the rest of the year! It is shaping up for some interesting stories in section one again this year.

  115. Eurpoe 72 says:

when did the JJ schedule add arlington?

  116. BB&AS says:

just recently…JJ never filled the opening when St. A’s bailed on them. I believe Bosco bailed on Arlington – so a match was made to get them both up to max. games.

  117. P&G says:

    1st hand,

Please explain how where and when your Arlington 9th graders beat Jay, Town, and Somers last year. From a John Jay perspective beating our “B” or “C” team doesn’t count. If you played a team in the summer with a few Jay, Town or Somers kids on it – that doesn’t count either. I’m sure you would not have played the U14 Prime Time team.

I don’t mean to come across as confrontational – but I’m not sure you are talking apples to apples here.

  118. Sec1 says:

    First Hand

you are correct on KI he was pulled a few different times because of effort, plus D man om him played well. Both Teams could have played better, Arl moving in the right direction all the way around. One thing I find lol is they did not put up Mabus last goal # 10.

  119. LaxScout says:

Didn’t JJ spank Arlington in a pre-season scrimmage? If I remember the score was about 19-5 and JJ sat a lot of their starters early.

I just checked the JJ website there is no new game added with Arlington.

  120. BB&AS says:

Yes, it was not a competitive scrimmage. Game is scheduled for May 19 at 4:30 pm at JJHS.

  121. ahslax says:

    P&G
Joe Colarusso coached the last years 8th grade team I believe it was all the A teams.

  122. laxing says:

O’donnel does not start for jj, although he contributes greatly

  123. Est 1873 says:

Congrat’s to Arlington on their continued improvement. Donnie, Joe and Peeps are all doing a great job. I am not one for moral victories, but yesterdays Town game clearly shows there is something to be excited about up North. Good for you Arlington and Staff. Enjoy the ride!

  124. Old Rugger says:

1st hand JJ A side 8th grade is a spring team (not summer) and play a CONNY heavy schedule at least last year mainly CONNY teams (Darien, NC, Ridgefield, Greenwhich) Town & Duxbury and Summit, many of the kids play on the Prime time team in the summer. Neither team played an Arlington Team during this time last year. Please double check that not looking to stir things but I was very close to that team. The only time I remember seeing any Dutchess county team was in ULTRA indoors at brewster.
On another note My Lepards lost to Navy 9-11 thus ends the dream.

  125. Dee-up says:

you gotta be kidding talking about 8th and 9th graders win or loosing .

  126. section 1 says:

Horace Greeley is still one of the top teams in section 1 even though their record doesn’t say it

  127. what's the score? says:

    Section 1: Re: Horace Greeley

To quote Bill Parcell’s ” you are what your record says you are” which at this time for HG, is not a very good team.

  128. ahslax says:

Old Rugger: I think the initial point was, is that we are trying to strengthen our youth program (my point) in an earlier thread someone mentioned that our youth program was weakly coached by fathers that had no lax background, this isn’t completely true we have had coaches that have played D1 ball. Lacrosse in the Arlington area is relatively new compared to the Westchester area but more of our kids are playing up with solid summer teams and many of them are playing year round at the Brewster dome. For years we have been lobbying to get experienced coaches at AHS, had we had the benefit of the Connolly coaching staff 2 years ago I think it could have been a closer game with Yorktown Thursday, and hoping that the JJ game on the 19th will be more exciting than the first scrimmage…haha
