Both Somers and Ward Melville stated their case during the regular season.
That’s when the Tuskers beat John Jay for the first time since 2003 and the Patriots, who earlier in the season knocked Yorktown from the unbeaten ranks, did the same to West Islip on May 4.
Now, Somers is preparing to meet John Jay again and Ward Melville is set to square off one more time against West Islip.
Only now, the stakes are much higher.
I’ll be on hand at White Plains for the Section1 finals and Chris Kieser will be reporting from Stony Brook University, the site of the Section 11 finals.
Be sure to check back for updates.

Hey gang –
In case you missed it, here’s the link from the main body of this post to the NYS tournament bracket:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=319312
where are the all sectionns??
Though the all-section team was selected Monday night, in years past, it has taken a few days for the coaches to then input the names and type them all up. I checked on the status earlier this week and that process had not yet started, so I cant give a definitive date. All I can tell you is when I have them, youll have them.
Predictions
Suffolk
WM 7, WI 6
Smithtown West 12, Sayville 9
Mt. Sinai 13, Glenn 6
Section 1
Town by 2
JJ by 1
Rye by 2
Hey guys, just wanted to update everyone that the FCIAC highlight video and interviews are featured on insidelacrosse.com homepage.
For JJ, let’s strive for five, boys! Your hard work all year is going to pay off tonight! Best of luck!
Yorktown by 5
JJ by at least 7
Rye runs house on PV
I gotta wonder just how unbiased any opinion is when someone picks John Jay to win an evenly matched game, for all intents and purposes, by 7 goals. If Jay does as you say, then Nisky better watch out.
Heading out to the Suffolk games now, good luck to all the teams playing today
We’re here at White Plains where Billy Reis scored in the opening minute to give Put Valley a 1-0 lead.
Dillon Chestnut scores unassisted with 6:32 remaining to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Rob Santangelo scores off a feed from Cole McCormack to pull Rye within 2-1.
Andrew Wood scores unassisted with just over three minutes left in the first and Rye ties it at 2-2.
Jo nice job this year.
My pedictions:
Class A
Town 14 Lakeland 8
Class B
Somers 10 John Jay 9 in (ot)
Class C
Rye 9 Put Valley 6
And in Suffolk County
West Islip 12 Ward Melville 7
It’s tied 2-2 after one.
Also Joe,

Thanks

Chesnut ties it up at 4-4 with 3:40 left in the second quarter.
So far Donald Keough of Rye has held PV’s Jimmy van de Veerdonk scoreless.
It’s tied 4-4 at the half.
We’re under way in the third and Kyle Calabro scores quickly to give PV a 5-4 lead.
From the Suffolk Class C final, Mount Sinai leads Glenn 8-6 at the half.
I think that the Rye-PV game will be tight (obviously since it’s tied at the half), but that Rye will pull it out by 2. 10-8 Rye
Jay-Somers will be a one goal game, unfortunately my gut tells me that Somers will pull this out, Longo will be the difference. 10-9 Somers
Town will win by 5-6 over L/P, too much firepower. 14-8
Chesnut scores his third. PV leads 6-4.
Special thanks to Chris Kieser, who is reporting for us from Stony Brook on the Suffolk finals.
Ryan Fitzgerald’s second goal of the game gives PV an 8-4 lead as the Tigers are pulling away. We’ve now completed three quarters.
Billy Reis of PV was called for an illegal stick penalty. It’s a three-minute unreleasable penalty. Golden opportunity for Rye.
Jack O’Callaghan scores to pull Rye within 8-5.
‘Callaghan scores again. It’s 8-6.
From Chris at Stony Brook: Mount Sinai leads Glenn 11-8 after three.
Chesnut scores his fourth of the game and 100th of his career to give PV a 9-6 lead with three minutes remaining.

Casey scores his third. LP leads 9-5 with five minutes left in the third.
Wow.
Ranagan breaks the ice. Ytown trails 9-6 with four minutes left in the third.
Why shut off one when you can get two for the same price? Genius game plan by Lindsay, one that requires perfect execution. And so far it worked.
Good sign for Ytown. KI now breaks the ice. Ytown trails 9-7 with one minute to go in the third.
9-7 after 3. This one should go down to the wire, unbelievable game.
Just to reiterate, it’s West Islip 4, Ward Melville 4 at the half.
Hodgson scores third. It’s 5-4
Casey scores his fourth early in the fourth to pull Ytown within 9-8.
A very entertaining matchup during the game has been 5-foot-1 Andrew Fazio of LP shutting off 6-4 John Ranagan of Yorktown.

Seriously, congrats to coach Lindsay and every last member of Lakeland/Panas, their families, friends and pets … THAT was an inspired effort.
West Islip now leads 8-4 with 4:47 to play.
Hats off to L/P, just reading these updates gave me butterflies and got me very excited. I really wish i was there because that seems like one amazing game (just like ‘Cuse/Cornell?). What a game.
Now I’m really looking forward to the Somers/JJ game. Lets go Tuskers!

Echoing Joe’s words … Chris has done an outstanding job for us today.
A special touch tonight is the high-tech scoreboard. White Plains coach Mark Armogida went out to each team’s practice and get head shots of each player which were displayed with each goal. It’s been a great venue and well-run event here at White Plains.

Madarasz crank with 2:40 left makes it Smith West 2, Sayville 2
One of the best Lacrosse games High School or College I have ever seen. WOW. I know that most of us who write in this blog have played in games just like todays, Yorktown Lakeland game. Coach Lindsey did a great job in game planning and his kids were up to task, however got to give the kids from Yorktown a lot of credit for staying in the game and finding a way to win. Again Wow and really my hat is off to bothe teams. Good luck Town Put Valley and Somers/JJ winner as the tournament moves forward.
Messina puts Sayville up 3-2 with 57 seconds left in first. Quarter now over.
Beck scores to start the third. JJ now trails 7-5.
Perettine ties it for Smith West 37 seconds into second. It’s 3-3.
Matturro puts Smith West back up 4-3 with 8 minutes to go in half.
Town-LP game was a dandy. I was on the edge of my seat the entire game. Great job by LP with a strong effort and great game plan. Town hung in and chipped away with KI and Ranagan scoring when they needed it. Casey with a great game. He kept Town in the game early. Fennesey continues to amaze me… Good luck in the next round.

Schultz ties it for Smith West midway through the third. It’s 7-7 folks and may go right down to the wire.
Mellynchuk and Meehan score back to back to put Sayville up 9-7 late in the 3rd
Nice job Somers! Good season JJ. Somers was just too athletic, dominated faceoffs, Longo played excellent. Butt many expected this to be a rebuilding year and JJ still one of the best in the section, good season and bright future for Jay.
great day at WP, wonderful venue, loved the pic’s of the kids..Fazio is now my second favorite high school lax player (kid still is #1) of all time, I do not believe I have ever seen a size mis-match like that in any sport, more than a foot and probably 100 lbs to Ranagan..wow…Coach Lindasy, what a great job, and the goalie was awesome..PV could have won their game easier in my view had they sharpened their shot selection, and come a bit quicker with the slide like the did in the second half…once Santagelo got hurt, he was not the same, that hurt Rye, hats off to him for gutting it out..JJ looked a bit confused in their zone, but they played with heart, loved the Daniello kid..
And one final note, congrats to my Bears for winning the sportsmanship award~
Martinsen scores 45 seconds into 4th. It’s now 9-8 Sayville
Smith West ball, 8:06 left …
At least Cusie was originally right Somers with 14 goals. Daniello played excellent, 4 goals and 2 assists? Good to know he has another 2 years left
Keenan ties game at 9 with 7:14 to play.
Meehan puts Sayville back up, 10-9 with 5:30 left.
Mellynchuk scores again. It’s 11-9 Sayville with 2:54 to play.
Sayville defeats Smithtown West 11-9, advances to Long Island Championship/state quarterfinal on Tuesday against Section 8 champion Garden City.
Congrats to Somers, they played a great game and were the better team tonight. How can anyone argue that Coach Lew is not the coach of the year after tonight?! He did a great job with that team. Good luck to all Section 1 teams that are moving on to games next week. Jay will be back next year, bigger and stronger!
JJ D let up some easy looks in first half and had no middie push during the game. O was driven by Daniello inverted. JoJo had some nice shots and Somers shot well as a team
Congratulations to Somers on their Section title !!! We will miss JoJo next season but our juniors ( Petre, Pfiffner, Deiana, Tullgren, Partenza, Longo, Bello, Smith, DePaolis, Madigan and Sullivan) will be back next year, bigger and stronger !!!!!
Congrats to PV with a great win today. You were definitely the better team today.
Good luck in the states and to the seniors who understandably must have taken extra joy out of this as they can at least record a Section 1 Class C Title as they finish their careers.
I know it must be tough right now but congratulations Rye on finishing up a very good season with numbers of good wins including over the Class B champs and the finalist in the Class A championships.
Hold your heads high seniors as you finished your high school careers winning the Class C Championship during your soph and junior years and played critical roles in taking Rye to the Dome this year and last yr winning the State football championship. Other seniors were key players in other great Rye sports teams.
Good luck to all you guys as you move on to college and PG years and in continuing to play lacrosse.
Congrats to the sophs and juniors. You made great progress this season and really contributed in major ways. Play hard and improve this summer and good luck next season.
Great convincing win today Somers and best of luck going forward in the states. Good job by the goalie and as well to see balanced scoring from guys other then Jo.
Congrats to all the Jay seniors on great careers and good luck in the future.
It’s obvious that Daniello is a special player. I believe that he and Jack O’Callaghan (Rye) lead the elite attack and middies in next season’s Junior class.
Good luck to all the Sec. 1 teams moving on. A class game sounds like it was a good one.
slacrosse –
It was great meeting you yesterday. I agree about Daniello of course. I projected he would be a major D-I player before he even played a varsity game which I suppose was going out on a limb. I think there’s little doubt it will happen now, especially with the scores of college coaches in attendance yesterday.
For those of you that critisized coach Lew, and the name ” RED RAGE”, his supposed lack of scouting, and you think he is all about himself. One word for you IGNORANT. He took over a program that all though has talent and athletes was in turmoil. Kids no longer wanted to play, and others had all ready left. Lew, and Brian came in and gave them something to believe in, assured them they would be successful again.Getting Lombardo, Deiana, and others back was huge in both depth, and Moral. Lew lets kids know they are truly a TEAM, and they have a family stick together through thick and thin attitude. He is truly one of the best motivators in Section 1 in any sport. Then , in getting everyone involved in the offense, and using athleticism in running multiple defenses, culminated in a Championship Last night. Lew , Brian, and all Tusker Nation stick out your chest and walk proud. Because the Indians had NO answer.
John Jay was out hustled and out coached last night. Congrats to Lake/Panas you guys left it on the field. And to PV, and Town lets keep it rolling.
Purple-
Enjoy the moment. Congrats on the sectional title, but don’t get too far out there. Beating Jay is nice, but Jay has always been more talk than trophy in the states. The “rage” got beaten pretty handily by the Field, and I would expect it will get handled at least as badly from Nisky. Just sayin.
Lew inherited this program he did not build this. lets see how he does the next few years. It is like marr coming in his first year and winning states. A sign of a good coach is developing kids and winning year in and year out
I’d like to add a two observations that I felt were game changers during the class A title game yesterday. Both involve grossly incompetant game calls.
Scenario 1: A yorktown defenseman was playing the attackman with the ball in the corner of the field closest to Lakeland’s bench. He was applying alot of pressure (which is fine) however he inadvertantly brought his stick up the attackman’s chest, got hooked under the players chin, and wound up lifting the players Pro 7 helmet almost off his head.
Blown call: No flag
Result: Instead of an L/P possession, yorktown gets the ball
Scenario 2: Lakeland is man up and Rebel attack #6 makes a skip pass which is deflected off of a yorktown (#18 I believe) long pole’s shaft. There is a ref on the side where the pass came from and a ref on the side where the deflected pass went out of bounds.
Blown Call: Neither sees the ball make contact with the defenseman’s shaft and incorrectly award yorktown the ball.
Result: Instead of L/P being man up – Town gets the ball, Lieberman scores

Iceman….It hurts to loose, but every game has their questionable calls. Town has had more than their share in the past. The Umps seemed fair at the section 1 final, no big grumbles about that. Be a sport and Move On already.
