Dan Johnston won’t have to travel far to get to the college where he’ll be playing lacrosse.
The junior from Section 1 (NY) power John Jay just decided on Marist College, a decision was first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
A big, strong player, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound defenseman/longstick midfielder has a tremendous upside with a combination of athleticism and a high lacrosse IQ. He’s also an outstanding student with a 3.9 GPA.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Dan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose Marist because of their excellent business program, coaching staff and beautiful campus.
I was looking for a perfect balance between academics and lacrosse and I feel that’s what Marist has to offer. In addition, Coaches Wilkinson, Gongas, and Farley have established an excellent lacrosse program that I want to be part of.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Sacred Heart, Fairfield, Manhattan, Providence and Albany.
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Business.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
High lacrosse IQ with the ability to not only defend my man but move the ball in transition.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
My off-hand and my physicality.
When did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I was introduced to lacrosse in 3rd grade.
What other sports have you played?
I’ve played baseball and soccer, and I still play basketball.
What travel team do you play on?
Predators.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my Westchester Predators coaching staff particularly Mike McCall, Tom Interlicchio, Paul Santavicca and Ryan Penner.
I would also like to thank my high school coaches (Tim) Schurr, (Nick) Daniello and (Jeremy) Guski.
I’d also like to thank my entire family especially my parents for all their support.
