Syracuse University didn’t have to look far to find an athletic, versatile Class of 2017 standout with ideal size.
In fact, Casey Rogers is already part of the Syracuse lax family. His father, Lelan Rogers, a 1987 Syracuse grad, just finished his ninth season as assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Orange.
So it should come as no surprise that Casey has just committed to the Orange, a decision first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The attackman at Westhill High School, Rogers scored 47 goals to go along with 12 assists this past spring. As a freshman, he registered 34 goals and nine assists. He had 50 goals and six assists.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Rogers, a lefty, is projected to play midfield as well as attack at the next level.
Rogers plays on Orange Crush during the summer.
This past summer, he attended Maverick Showtime National Lacrosse Recruiting Spotlight where he made the all-star team. He also attended the Orange Crush Showcase where he was selected for the all-star game
Now, here’s a Q&A with Casey on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision to attend Syracuse was that I grew up bleeding orange.
Having my dad being a assistant coach, I saw first-hand how great it is to be a Orange.
Syracuse has many great traditions and I couldn’t just pass those by. Ever since I was little I wanted to suit up and play my collegiate career in the Dome.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
It was a tough recruiting process for me because i was undecided about which sport I wanted to play. I had a few (schools) interested (in lacrosse) such as Towson, Ohio State, but I never was able to visit any of those schools
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
I have not yet decided what I will major in college. I’m very interested in biological sciences so maybe something in that field.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Being 6-4 and 230 pounds, I’m usually bigger than my competitors. For being a big kid, I have good feet. Dodging from up top down the alleys and from behind is in my arsenal.
Shooting and shooting on the run is also a strong part of the game for me. I would describe my style of play as physical. I use my body and strength to get past my defenders.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
The area of the game I need to work on is using my right hand. Though this season I have worked hard at becoming a ambidextrous player I still can keep working on it.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Lacrosse has been in my life since I was born. From as far as I can remember, I’ve had a stick in my hand.
I’ve also started playing football at a very young age.
I started playing hockey in eighth grade. My two best friends both played. I remember going to one of their games and saying “I’m going to play hockey next year.”
The summer going into eighth grade, I skated almost everyday at Tennity Ice Pavilion on the campus of Syracuse. I progressed very fast and I made my high school hockey team as a first-year player
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my family. Andrew, CJ, and Gillian. Also, all my teammates.
