When Joe Kim arrived at Georgetown University in the fall of 2014, being a part of the men’s lacrosse team as a manager was an opportunity he was excited about.
Now, a year later, Kim has gone from the sideline to the center of the field as a faceoff specialist for the Hoyas.
The three-year letter-winner in lacrosse at Rye Country Day (NY), a resident of nearby Eastchester, has earned a roster spot with the Hoyas this season.
The 5-foot-10, 150-pound Kim who became manager after being cut from the Georgetown varsity as a freshman, worked year-round to have a shot at earning a spot on the team this season.
“I spent 12 months playing wall-ball, running, lifting, and of course facing off,” he said. “I spent nearly every single day this past summer studying film, working with faceoff coaches, conditioning, eating healthy, and basically transforming my entire life so I had the best chance of making the roster.
“Making the team this year was one of the happiest moments of my life. I couldn’t believe that the kid who was always picked last in elementary school recess kick ball games, bullied around athletically having never made a team in middle school, somehow was playing a Division I sport.”
Kim helped Rye Country Day advance to the NYSAISAA state title game during his senior season, finishing 13-4 overall and 6-0 in FAA League play, winning the Western New England Division II title.
Kim won 64 percent of his faceoffs during his high school career and 79 percent his senior season.
