To say Austin Fraser of Hendrick Hudson High School (NY) is a do-it-all attackman would be an understatement.
“Austin is an all-around attackman,” said the Class of 20018 standout’s coach at Hen Hud, Craig Solomon. “He can dodge, feed and shoot. He plays with a high lacrosse IQ and relentless energy.
“He wants the ball in the biggest moments and is a great teammate. The bigger the moment, the better he plays.”
Indeed. Fraser had 21 goals and 32 assists as a freshman on the Sailors’ varsity squad last spring.
After three more varsity seasons, Fraser has decided on his college destination, committing to Villanova, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
A two-sport standout, the 5-foot-7, 159-pound Fraser, a natural righty, plays point guard for Hen Hud’s boys basketball team, which is coached by former Hen Hud lacrosse standout Jordan Hirsch. He is also an Honor Roll student
Now, here’s a Q&A with Austin on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision were, how good of a school was it, how competitive the lacrosse team and schedule were , and how big the school was.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The other schools I was interested in were Providence, Penn State, UPenn, UMass, Fairfield, Binghamton and Colgate. All of these schools I visited except for UMass.
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
I have not come to a final decision about pursuing a major but I have been thinking about business.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My footspeed and being able to use both hands just as efficiently. Actually my left-handed shot is faster than my dominant right-handed shot. I would describe my play style as an attacker and feeder.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on coming around the cage and finishing. Also I need to work on my shot on the run in both hands.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse when I was entering third grade. My dad and his best friend, Richie Mullen, played lacrosse at a young age and they thought it would be a good idea to introduce it to me.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play on Long Island Express North under Coach Schreiber and Coach Reda.
I participated in the Princeton showcase, the Penn State showcase and the UPenn showcase.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank Coach Schreiber, Coach Reda, Coach Soloman, and my parents for everything they have done for me.
