It will be the beginning of a new era for Greenwich High School (CT) this season.
After seven years as head coach, which included an FCIAC title in his first year season (2010) and the program’s first-ever state title, Scott Bulkley has moved on to take over the program in his newly adapted hometown of Newtown.
Enter new coach Bobby Lutz, who brings not only FCIAC experience as both a player (at New Canaan) and coach (at Darien, New Canaan and Stamford), but a wealth of knowledge of the league as well.
For a first look at the Cardinals’ new beginning, we turn to Will Perry. One of the area’s leading midfielders, Perry has one final varsity season before heading to the University of North Carolina.
Now, here are Will’s perspectives on the season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
We lift as a team in the offseason regularly. We also played in three tournaments in the fall. Winter lacrosse just started as well so we will be in shape and our sticks will be ready for the spring.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
As always, we are looking forward to our big conference games like Ridgefield, New Canaan and Darien.
Last year we came up a little short against Chaminade and Smithtown East.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
This past season we lost a bunch of key players in our offense and our defense. Offensively, our returning starters are Scooter Harrington, Mike Sands and me.
We are expecting players like Jack O’Connor and Matt Baugher to step into a big role for us this season.
Defensively Callan Smith, Danny Colligan and Holden Tiedy are our returning players.
Kids who will be stepping into a big role will be Luc Ayoub, JT Lawrence and Peter Santry.
Bailey Savio will have no trouble continuing the success we’ve had at the faceoff X.
We should have a couple more players that will surprise people.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
We should have a good, solid team all around this year. Younger and older kids will contribute on offense and defense.
We are hungry and excited to get started with Coach Lutz. He will help keep our program ok the right track and get us to the championships.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
This year I believe the teams in the race for an FCIAC championship will be the same as they have been.
Every team loses a bunch of key players but Darien, New Canaan, Ridgefield and Greenwich will continue to be top teams in the league.
