The first Class of 2019 commitment by a player from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut has come from Corning in upstate New York where goaltender Logan McNaney has verballed to Maryland, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
McNaney is from a lacrosse family. Earlier last week, his brother, Jake, a faceoff midfielder, committed to Alfred University.
Jake and Logan McNaney are the sons of former Corning varsity girls lacrosse coach Kim McNaney, who stepped down last year after 18 seasons as head coach.
The 5-foot-5, 125-pound McNaney, a lefty, is a quick, athletic goaltender who is a strong stopper and aggressive on clears.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Logan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
As soon as I got done with my second visit, I was sure that I wanted to be a Terp.
Maryland lacrosse has a great history of success and I look forward to becoming a part of that.
The campus has so much to offer and I know I will enjoy my time there. The coaching staff also went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and valued.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Maryland, UNC, and Johns Hopkins.
I was considering Notre Dame, Virginia, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Business and Finance.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel like I have good reaction time and I have a good sense where kids will shoot on me whether it’s a shot on the run or a time-and-room shot.
I’m the energetic type of goalie so I like coming out and make those big saves on the crease, which gives our team a lot of momentum, resulting in a fast break goal.
You are from a lacrosse family. How big an impact did they play in your development?
My parents and my brother had a huge impact on my development of being a lacrosse player. My mom coached a very successful girls varsity lacrosse program for 18 years and I learned so much just from being a part of that experience.
My brother and dad would often spend time shooting on me which gave me the extra practice goalies need. Lacrosse has always been a major part in all of our lives.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Sweetlax and Corning Gaffer. I participated in the Inside Lacrosse Recruiting Tournament
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
Obviously I’d like to thank my family for their support, time and dedication. I’d also like to thank the Streeten family for really getting me involved in the game of lacrosse at such a young age, also Dennis Lebaron for giving me all of the ins and outs of being a goalie and really the first goalie coach I’ve had. Kevin Martin for giving me so many opportunities and putting in so much time for me in the recruiting process. And if it wasn’t for all of my teammates I’ve had over the years, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.
