Hobart has landed first Class of 2018 commit.
It comes from near its Geneva, NY campus: Skaneateles defender Marc Welsh decided on the Statesmen.
The decision was first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Welch, a lefty, is an athletic and agile and a strong position defender.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Marc on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I wanted a small school with strong academics where I could excel in the classroom and on the field.
The coaching staff at Hobart really impressed me both on the visit and during the prospect day.
(Hobart Head) Coach (Greg) Raymond has serious goals for his team, and I want to be a part of that. I felt very comfortable there.
Also, Hobart is not too far from home, which is a plus for my family.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Lafayette and Colgate. I visited Lafayette.
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
I’m planning on studying biochemistry. Hobart has an amazing internship program that will open many doors for me in the future.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I have a high IQ of team defense. I am strong at creating turnovers, getting groundballs, and moving the ball up the field.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to continue to work on all aspects of my game. A great player never stops improving and learning. I work with my coach, Ric Beardsley, in his off-season clinics and he helps me put in the reps and fine tune my technique.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My mom put a lacrosse stick in my hand when I was 3. My cousin, Chris Welch, played at Binghamton, and he encouraged me to play lacrosse by giving me gear.
I have played hockey and skated since I was around 3. I play hockey for Skaneateles High School (NY state champions 2015). I also played soccer and I enjoy golf in my free time.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Upstate Lacrosse Club (Ric Beardsley). I participated in Philly Freshman Showcase, Nike Blue Chip, Maverik Showtime, and Philly Summer Invitational.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank Ric Beardsley for helping me grow as a player, and for his hard work he does for his players both on and off the field.
I would also like to thank my high school coaches Ron Doctor, Seth Benjamin and Duane Ross for teaching me the love of the game from the beginning. Also, I would like to thank my teammates throughout the years that have made this experience so memorable.
Last but not least, I would like to thank my parents for all of the countless hours of driving, watching me play, and encouraging me to push myself to reach my goals.
