One of the top rising sophomores in New York has made his college choice.
Two-way midfielder Kyle Steinbach of Garden City has committed to the University of Maryland, a decision first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Steinbach, a righty, is poised to assume faceoff duties for the graduated James Sullivan, a Harvard recruit who just made the final 30-player pool for the U19 team.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Kyle on his commitment.
What were the main factors in the decision?
The minute I stepped onto the Maryland campus I knew it was where I wanted to go.
The highly ranked business school great alumni and the Maryland lacrosse tradition were also big factors, and the entire Maryland coaching staff made me feel right at home.
What other schools did you consider?
Bucknell , Fairfield , Hofstra , Bryant and Michigan
What academic major do you plan on pursuing?
Business
What are your strengths as a player?
I’m a midfielder who can shoot on the run with both hands. My size allows me to be a North/South dodger . As well as my ability to face off which allows me to control the game.
What area of the game do you need work on?
There is room for improvement in all areas.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports do you play?
I started off playing baseball but after moving into Garden City, lacrosse became my favorite sport. I also wrestle for my high school.
What travel team do you play for an what showcase events did you participate in?
Summer club team is GC 34. I participated in Jake Reed, Philly Showcase, Brine National Championships and the Nassau / Suffolk game.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I want to thank God for his favor in my life.
My parents for all their support in helping me pursue my dream of playing D-I lacrosse.
My high school coaches Steve Finnell and Joe Jacovina for guiding me through the process and helping me every step of the way.
My shooting coach John Savage and face off coach Matt Schomburg who have helped me become the player I am today.
Finally, I want to thank Maryland Head Coach John Tillman and his entire staff for giving me this great opportunity.
I’m excited to be part of the Maryland lacrosse family. I know what it takes to succeed academically as well as athletically at a place like Maryland and I’m excited to embrace the challenge.
