Some high school athletes have a hard time looking ahead to what they hope their four years in college will be like, both academically and athletically.
For Bryan Hess, that’s not a problem.
In fact, the Rumson-Fair Haven (NJ) 2017 standout is already looking ahead after that.
Hess’ anticipation of what lies ahead in the post-college “real world,” was one of the main factors in the athletic, twi-way midfielder’s commitment to Lafayette, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
An outstanding athlete who is a standout running back in football, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Hess, a righty, is an adept dodger on offense and strong defender.
He is also an outstanding student with a 4.05 grade-point average.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Bryan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I was looking for a really good academic school that would provide me with a great education and help prepare me for the “real world.”
I also wanted to play for a D-I lacrosse program and knew that the Patriot League was very competitive.
I wanted to find a school (academics, campus, geography, etc.) that was a “perfect fit” for me with or without lacrosse.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Lehigh University, Villanova University, Rutgers University, and Colgate University were a few other schools that I was interested in pursuing.
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Most likely Business/Economics.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My biggest strengths are my speed, stick skills, aggressive play, and ability to effectively play both ways.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I am always trying to improve all aspects of my game such as my shooting accuracy on the run.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Lacrosse is a very popular sport in my family. My dad, uncles, sisters, and cousins all played lacrosse. I probably had a lacrosse stick in my hand before I could walk, but I began to play organized lacrosse in the Fair Haven Youth Program when I was in the third grade.
I also currently play running back for the Rumson Fair Haven High School football team and also played basketball and baseball when I was much younger.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Tri-State Lacrosse program and our team has played in many different events over the last three summer and fall seasons.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
There are a lot of people I’d like to acknowledge but first and foremost my parents. None of this would have been possible without their support and encouragement.
I have been very fortunate to have had great coaches over the years, including my RFH youth coaches and my high school coach, Andy Eastwood.
Also my Tri State coaches Don Green, MV Whitlow and Ross Turco have all made me a better player.
