Alessio Jack “Gio” Giovannetti is sometimes as effective on the rare occasions he loses a faceoff as when he wins one.
That’s because the rising junior midfielder from three-time CHSAA (NY) Nassau/Suffolk AAA champ Chaminade is always quick to turn up the heat and apply pressure, often resulting in a turnover.
But it’s the fact that Giovannetti seldom loses faceoffs that made him a major Division I recruit. Late last week, he committed to Colgate, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Giovannetti, a righty, won 170 of 200 faceoffs (85 percent) and averaged 12.8 groundballs per game for Chaminade’s freshman team in 2014.
He is also an outstanding student with a 4.0 grade-point average.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Gio on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision were the academics of the school, the coaches and quality of the lacrosse program and campus.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was also considering Notre Dame, Bucknell, Vermont, Lafayette and Furman. I visited Bucknell and Vermont.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My quick hands, ability to get out of pressure, shooting on the run and lax IQ.
I would describe my style of play as grindy. Even if I lose a faceoff, I make sure it isn’t easy on my opponent.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on my defense so that I can become a more complete lacrosse .player.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse by my parents who thought it would be a fun sport to play. I have played football and basketball for many years until high school where I decided to focus on lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play on the 2017 Sweetlax Platinum team. This summer, I am attending Maverik Showtime.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank all of my family, friends and coaches who have supported me over the years. Especially to my faceoff coach Matt Schomburg, my Sweetlax coach Kevin Martin and all of my Chaminade coaches.
