JJ Alicea has all the attributes college coaches look for in an ideal attackman.
Size. Check.
He’s 6-foot-1, 185 points.
Scoring ability. Check.
Alicea is a feeder/finisher with a strong shot and quick release.
So it should come as no surprise that the Class of 2017 standout at St. Dominic’s (NY) is D-I bound. Alicea, a righty, committed to the admissions process at Bucknell University last week, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Now, here’s a Q&A with JJ on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose Bucknell University because their School of Management is one of the top in the country and because of their tough, impressive lacrosse program. I feel that their coaching staff is second to none.
What other schools were you considering?
Boston University, Amherst College and Brown University.
What are your strengths as a player, and how would you describe your style of play?
I have a fast shot and I am strong dodging from X, and either feeding, or putting myself in a position to get a quality shot off.
I think I am a pretty unselfish player and always try to find the teammate that has the best opportunity to score.
What area of the game do you need to work on?
One area of the game that I need to work on is shooting on the run with my left hand.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse by a neighbor of mine in the third grade, and I have been playing football since I was 5 years old.
What travel team do you play on and what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Long Island Express and I have participated in the Jake Reed Fall Showcase, Prep School Showcase, Big Four Showcase, Philly Showcase, and others.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my parents for their continuous support and the endless chauffeuring hours. I would like to thank Coach Matthew O’Brien, Coach Peter Keogh, Coach Matt Sheeran, Coach Doug Schreiber, Coach Kevin Adler, Coach Mike Channenchuk, Coach Pete McClean, Coach Rob Mirabile, Coach Michael Sweet and Scott Schreiber — the best trainer in the universe.
