It’s Day 1 of official varsity practice on Long Island today.
As we first detailed here back in the fall, the 2015 season will mark a sea change on the schedule for Suffolk County teams. For more on that click here.
While the big change will bring some uncertainty, one team that figures to be right in the mix in the Section 11 Class A title race is Sachem North.
The Flaming Arrows are coming off a 14-4 season and carried an 11-game win streak into the Suffolk semifinals, where they fell to eventual champion Smithtown East 17-11.
For a look at Sachem North heading into the start of practice, we turn to Sean O’Brien.
The senior attackman is a three-year starter who will be heading off to Army, a decision first reported when it was made here on LaxLessons.com back in August 2013.
Now, here are Sean’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I am a three-sport athlete at Sachem North. I feel that football and basketball have prepared me well for this lacrosse season.
Once basketball ended, I returned to lacrosse and started to train with the team.
The Sachem North lacrosse team has been training since the fall doing stick work, conditioning and lifting week in and week out.
Our team has also participated in a few tournaments giving us some more games under our belt in leading up to this season
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Suffolk League A is very different this year. It will be the first time in a while that we will be without Smithtown West, Smithtown East and West Islip in our regular-season matchups.
With that being said, we play some very different teams this year. I am looking forward to playing Ward Melville, Connetquot and Northport.
We will scrimmage Eastport-South Manor, and play a non-league game against Archibishop Spalding (MD) to get ready for our regular season.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
There really isn’t one player on our team. I would like to believe that the entire senior class here at Sachem North will step up and really play well this season.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think the strength of our team will be in our goalie, Jacob Giacalone. Our defense is built around him and he will determine a lot of our success this year as a team.
We have a solid offensive unit with players that each have their own strength.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
Suffolk League A is usually unpredictable, but this year I think it will be Sachem North, Connetquot Northport, and Ward Melville in contention.
