Syracuse University’s latest Class of 2017 tristate commitment comes from Connecticut’s Golden Coast, where midfielder Tanner Wood of Staples HS in Westport has decided on the Orange.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Wood is an athletic, talented all-around player who can also play attack and who is strong with both hands.

His selection of Syracuse was first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Tanner on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
In addition to being an amazing lacrosse school, when I first walked on the campus it felt like home.

Syracuse is a great school academically and has the perfect size student body for me. Also, (Syracuse Head) Coach (John) Desko and his coaching staff made me feel very welcome and I felt a great connection with them.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Fairfield University, Rutgers and the University of Maryland.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am an all-around midfielder who has quick bursts of speed and can shoot both right and left equally, and can also play attack.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I am constantly working on all aspects of my game. However, I am focusing on improving my time-and-room shooting, trying to increase the speed of my shot and I am always training to be faster on the field.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I really started to become interested in lacrosse when I was in fourth grade. That was also the year I decided to give up baseball. I also played football until eighth grade.

Westport has a strong lacrosse PAL program that I played in every year and then I started to really become competitive in lacrosse during my sixth-grade summer when I joined the Connecticut Chargers.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
My travel team is the Connecticut Chargers, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Summer, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Fall, The National 175 Showcase and FabFrosh.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my parents for supporting and guiding me throughout this entire process. They never pressured me and always stood by my side and always supported me in all of my decisions. They also taught a perfect balance between school and lacrosse.

And of course my brother for coming to all of my games and playing lacrosse with me during our free time.
