After turning in either 14- or 15-win seasons every year since 2009, Mountain Lakes broke through with a 22-win campaign in 2014.
The Lakers’ season ended with a 10-4 setback to Summit in the Tournament of Champions semifinals. The last time Mountain Lakes won 22 games — in 2008 — was when it last took the T of C title.
How do the Lakers look heading into a brand-new season?
We checked in with one of the top seniors in the Northeast, Brad Smith.
Smith, an attackman/midfielder, ranked high in LaxLessons’ recently released Tristate Top 100 preseason player rankings, verbally committed to Duke University midway through his sophomore year in 2013.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Smith enjoyed an outstanding varsity career in football at Mountain Lakes, as the Lakers’ starting quarterback.
Now, here are Brad’s perspectives on the upcoming lacrosse season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
To keep our sticks sharp and get on the field, we’ve been playing in the Indoor Sports Pavilion League in Randolph as we do every year.
Also, weight room and fitness club are a big part of our strength and conditioning training.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule looks pretty similar to last year with a few new teams like MoBeard (Morristown Beard).
As always, we are looking forward to games against Delbarton, Bergen (Catholic), Chatham and Ridgewood.
We are going to scrimmages in Downingtown, PA and Bridgewater with a lot of other teams.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
We have a few returning starters who should bring experience and a few new guys I think will step up like Cooper Vorel, Joe Adams, and great to welcome back Chiso Egbuchulam.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think our teamwork is always a strength of our team along with unselfish play.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
Competition should be strong as it always is and you can always expect teams like Delbarton, Summit, and Bergen (Catholic) to be strong contenders.
