Fall 2014 Signing Week coverage
John Allan “Jac” Cutillo’s description of what he brings the lacrosse field is as straightforward as his style of play.
“My strengths on the field would actually be my strength,” the big, strong, aggressive sophomore midfielder at Kings Park HS (NY) said. “I like to use my body and power to put myself in a scoring position on the field.”
The 6-foot, 190-pound righty did just that his freshman season on Kings Park’s varsity, as registered 25 goals and 10 assists to earn Suffolk County Division II rookie of the year honors.
He hopes his hard-nosed style translates to success at the major Division I collegiate level. Cutillo gave a verbal commitment earlier this week to Army, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Jac on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
After my recent visit to West Point, my family and I fell in love with the school and everything is has to offer to me as a student as well as on the field.
I felt that the focus West Point puts on leadership and athleticism, as well as academics was a perfect fit for me.
The family atmosphere that was present within the team, as well as the coaching staff was something that was very important in my search for the right school.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Prior to my commitment to West Point, I was interested in Air Force, the Naval Academy, Rutgers University, Boston University, UMass and Fairfield University. I had visited Rutgers, Boston U and Fairfield.
How would you describe your style of play?
My style of play is hard-nosed lacrosse. I aim to instill fear in my opponent and use my athleticism and strength to beat them in every way I possibly can.
What areas of work do you need to work on?
As a lacrosse player, I feel my game is never perfect and can always be improved upon. Specifically, I aim to strengthen my weak hand and work harder every day to better myself as a leader, both on and off of the lacrosse field.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
As a young kid, I played every sport there was. My father played lacrosse in high school, and seeing my athleticism at such a young age, we decided to play lacrosse for my youth program at Kings Park.
When it came time to choose between the spring sports, baseball and lacrosse, lacrosse easily won that contest.
In middle school I played football, basketball and lacrosse.
When I began high school, I decided to stick with just football and lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on and what showcase events did you participate in?
I play on Team 91 Lacrosse on Long Island. During my freshman year, I was a part of the 2014 Suffolk County freshman all-star team, 2013 and 2014 NXT Philly Individual, as well as team Showcase, the 2014 Maverik Showcase and an invitee to the 2015 Maverick Showcase
Any final thoughts and folks you’d like to thank for helping you get to this point?
First, of all, I would thank my amazing parents for supporting me and helping make this dream of mine come true.
I would like to give a big thanks to my youth coaches, my dad, Pete Plate and Pat Hull for teaching me the basics and for helping me to see that I could really play the game at the next level.
I want to also give a “shout out’ to Coach Jim Korwin, who pulled me back into lacrosse when I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue with a travel team. He gave me the confidence I needed.
I would also love to thank my coach Jimmy Mulé, Dave Kohler, Dave DiMaria and the staff at Team 91 for everything they have done to improve my game and the care they show for me.
Finally, I would like to thank my high school coaches JM Simpson and Marcello Sandoval, who had the confidence in me to bring me up to varsity as an eighth grader and start me in my freshman year. The steps all of these people have taken with me and how much they have all supported me is something I could never repay.
