If you’ve been following along as the commitments have been made on our Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section, you know the University at Albany has been been coming up big when it comes to attracting 2016 defensemen from Long Island.
The latest, first reported when it was made last week by Joe Lombardi on Insider, comes from Comsewogue High School’s Matt Spahr.
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Spahr, a takeaway, transition defender, is a righty performed well at several summer events, including for Team Suffolk in the Long Island Showcase.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The education was a tremendous factor in the decision. Albany has a few strong programs that I really like.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Dartmouth, UMass-Lowell, Yale, Marist, Colgate and Cornell.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel that my strengths as a player are my awareness and also my stick skills. I would describe myself as a takeaway and transition defender.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I definitely need to get bigger before I reach the college level while always improving my all around game.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I first started lacrosse at a youth clinic held at my school. I also have been on varsity soccer since freshman year.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I currently play on Long Island Empire. I went to the Fall Philly Showcase, Under Armour Uncommitted Game, Super Sophs and the Long Island Showcase (Rising Junior, Suffolk)
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you get to this point?
I want to thank my parents. Without them, I could never have reached this point. They always keep me going towards my goals and pushing me.
I also want to thank all of my coaches and trainers I have had since I started. I could not have gotten here without you.
