Fall 2014 Signing Week coverage
The Brunswick School (CT) accomplished a historic first this past spring.
The Bruins were first-time New England West I Division champions. Considering the 13-team division includes an array of national powers, it was a momentous milestone for sure.
Will Brunswick stay in the title chase in 2015?
For more, we checked in with one of the top seniors in the nation, New Rochelle (NY) resident and defenseman/longstick midfielder Lazare Zoungrana, who committed to Virginia in the summer heading into his sophomore season.
Now, here are Lazare’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
(Head) Coach (Dave) Bruce (the NE West I coach of the year in 2014) advocates that our players play multiple sports in order to retain a high level of competitiveness. The kids that don’t play a winter sport are in the weight room four times a week in order to improve strength and agility.
We also play in the Chelsea Piers Lacrosse League on Sunday nights (in Stamford, CT) against some of the area’s best teams in order to get our sticks sharp for the season. It allows us to play together as a team long before the season starts.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We have added numerous out of conference games that the team is really looking forward to such as New Canaan and Malvern Prep as well as Kent Denver and West Linn, two of the top teams from Colorado and Oregon (respectively).
We are also really looking forward to our game against Haverford who we played last year. Every NE West I game is always a battle so we make sure not to overlook any team in our league.
We are also scrimmaging numerous teams during our Florida trip and we are also scrimmaging Greenwich High which should be fun since we didn’t get to scrimmage them last year.
What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Junior Jack Stephenson will do a great job filling in for Tommy Heidt in net this year. He’s been on the team since freshmen year and he’s worked hard to prepare himself for this opportunity. We also have a great group of sophomores that got some playing time last year and are ready to step into major contributing roles.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think our experience is probably our biggest strength. Most of the seniors on the team have been playing since their sophomore year so we know what it takes to compete in this league and the same goes for the juniors.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The New England West I is one of the most competitive leagues in the country. Any team can win on any given day. That being said, Deerfield, Avon Old Farms, and Salisbury are always some of the top contenders in the league.
