Daniel Locke drew recruiting interest from some of the most tradition-rich programs in Division I lacrosse.

But Locke’s decision on what program he will call home tells a lot about his own quest to conquer challenges — not to mention a desire to be a key part of building a winner.

The Class of 2017 longstick midfielder from Portsmouth Abbey School (RI) has given a verbal commitment to the admissions process at the College of the Holy Cross, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-8,165-pound Locke, a righty, is an aggressive on-ball defender with an impressive array of takeaway checks.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Daniel on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Holy Cross has an outstanding alumni program as well as the nations best graduation success rate in the country. (Holy Cross Head) Coach (Judd) Lattimore, (Assistant) Coach (Ryan) Klipstien (Ryan) and (Assistant) Coach (Jordan) Nies  seem to be extremely focused on taking this program to a whole new level and I wanted to be a part of that. They are a great group of guys that made me seem like I was part of the Holy Cross family. They are going to do big things.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I highly considered Brown, Cornell, Providence, Hobart, Dartmouth and Penn. I visited Brown, Cornell, Providence and Penn.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths as a player consist of me being extremely aggressive on ball, and I have a knack to take the ball away with a series of stick checks, elite stick skills, and being one of the loudest kids on the defensive end of the field.

I also have quick feet which helps me to create havoc when my opponent is dodging.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I always need to be working to improve all aspects of my game. I’ve noticed that I need to keep working on my speed, strength, and my ground balls.

Screen Shot 2014-11-25 at 2.26.21 PMHow did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse because my dad played in college and my older brother started playing it at a young age. It’s family tradition.

I was also influenced by my former coach Jeff Jordan who inspired me to play lacrosse at the collegiate level.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Boston Laxachusetts under Coaches Sean Morris, Tim Shea, Dan Chouinard, Dave Evans, Steve Lydon, and Michael Connelly. This summer,  I participated in Adrenaline Black Card, Prep School Showcase, Adrenaline Platinum Cup, Baltimore Summer Kickoff, Crabfeast, and Maverick Showtime, where I was an all-star.

Any final thoughts and people you would like to thank for helping you along the way?
I would like to thank all of my Laxachusetts coaches for developing me into the man I’ve become today and developing my lacrosse skills immensely. I would also like to thank Jeff Jordan for teaching me the game of the lacrosse and teaching me how to be a leader on and off the field.

I would also like to thank Al Brown (Portsmouth Abbey coach)  for all he has done for me in the recruiting process, as well as the great advice he has given me about being a leader, and a better person. He has developed me into an elite high school  lacrosse player.

Lastly, I would like to thank my mom, dad, and my brother supporting me in every aspect of lacrosse, as well as driving me to every event.
