Jameson Hill and the Wilton Warriors will be on a mission in the spring of 2015.
After not earning a bid to either the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) or Connecticut state playoffs for the first, the Warriors, who won the state title in 2013, are eager to reestablish themselves as one of the state’s premier programs.
Hill, a team captain, is one of five college-bound Wilton seniors who will lead that charge. The goaltender made his decision last week, verballing to Division III power Ohio Wesleyan University, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Hill, a righty, combines good size with strong communication skills. He is known for his stopping ability. You can watch his highlight reel here.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Jameson on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I had a really great tour with (OWU Assistant) Coach (Joe) May and (Assistant) Coach (Trey) Keeley. The coaches were so energetic and nice to me. That really made a big impact as well as the school being a good fit for me academically.
They also offer a strong business program which I was looking for as well and receiving multiple donations that are being used to create multiple new buildings on campus.
On my overnight, I had a great experience with my former Wilton teammate Will Garbus. The lacrosse program has a storied history and overall it is where i feel i can help make an impact and win a national championship.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Hamilton, Union and Dickinson. I visited all three.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my communication and quick hands as well as pushing transition with quick outlets.
I would describe my style of play as sort of unique. I never had really had anyone coach me on how to play goalie till high school so what I really focus on is stopping the ball. I’m not going to try to bait you or guess. I’m worried about stopping the ball and getting it up field.
What are your thoughts on being among five Wilton players who have committed to Division III programs that combine academics and athletics and what are your goals for the spring of 2015?
Well first things first I could not be happier. They are some of my closest friends who I have been playing with since the first grade and to see that they get a chance to continue their lacrosse careers at such strong schools is great.
As for our goals for this season, we feel like we have a lot to prove. Being the first team in Wilton history to not make the state or FCIAC tournament is a big slap in the face and we take it personally.
We have had a goal to walk off the field our senior season as state champions for as long as I can remember and as of now we are taking steps in the right direction to accomplish that. We are a hungry team it’s just a matter if we sit down to eat.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Wilton has a great youth program and I started when I was in the first grade playing house league lacrosse at Allens Meadows. that’s where i first tried goalie and loved everything about it.
I also have played hockey since the first grade and am looking forward to my senior season playing for Wilton. currently were wrapping up our fall league season and cannot wait to play in our annual alumni game, where some OWU lacrosse alums play in as well.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
My travel team is Warrior Pride, just our local town team run through the high school coaches and alumni that comeback to help coach. We went to tristate, and showcases i attended this summer were philly boys showcase where i was an all-star and Nat 175
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank?
First, I want to thank coach plantholt for the opportunity to play at OWU and I plan on making the most of it.
I would like to thank all of my coaches throughout my high school career, Coach Clancy, Willaum, Weisman, Wood, Pearsall and Ward.
Also all the summer league coaches and alumni that volunteer their time so we can get better.
Finally, I would like to thank my parents for constantly helping me throughout this process whether it be paying for tournaments, showcases, or travel teams to driving 10 hours to OWU so I could have the opportunity to see what it was like.
They have always been there for me and i could not have asked for a better support system throughout my recruiting process. So thanks mom and dad
