Sean Kuttin’s start in lacrosse came about because of his curiosity.
“In third grade, I asked my dad what lacrosse was after seeing a lacrosse cage,” the freshman at Chaminade High School (NY) recalls. “After being told, I said, ‘I think you would be good at it.’
“That day, he bought me my first lacrosse stick and I have had one in my hands ever since.”
Kuttin will be taking his stick down south for college. The midfielder gave a verbal commitment last week to Johns Hopkins, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-8, 150-pound Kuttin’s verbal makes Hopkins the first college program to have more than one 2018 verbal from the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for lacrosse. The other came from another midfielder, upstate standout Alex Mabbett of Victor (NY).
A superb dodger, Kuttin, a righty who is a resident of St. James, is also a cerebral player who has a quick first step and an impressive array of fakes.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Sean on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose JHU because of the great academic opportunities and the ability to compete for a national championship.
Another huge factor was because of the rich lacrosse tradition JHU offers and all of the great past players and teams to come out of Hopkins.
The most important factor in my decision was the coaching staff. (Hopkins Head) Coach (Dave) Pietramala and his staff made it clear to me from the moment I met them that they embodied the principles that are important to me. I believe they will help me develop as a lacrosse player, student and young man.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
UVa and Duke.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe my strengths as a player are my ability to break down a defense and make a quick decision, my lacrosse IQ, my stick skills and vision.
I believe I am very versatile and can play in between the lines or inside the box 6 vs. 6.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I am never satisfied and believe I can improve all aspects of my game. I will be focusing on getting bigger, faster, and stronger.
What other sports have you played?
I also played football and basketball.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Team 91.
I played at Jake Reed and 3D Bluechip.
Any final thoughts?
I would not be the athlete, student and person I am today without many people who have helped me along the way.
Most importantly, I have a very strong faith and believe nothing is possible without God’s blessing and help.
My mom, dad and three younger brothers have supported me to reach all of my dreams and have made huge sacrifices for me to be the best that I can be. My parents have instilled values in me that will guide me forever. My dad has been a coach, mentor and role model. He has provided me with every opportunity and resource to improve my game.
I would also like to thank all of my coaches at 91 lacrosse, Coach Wichelens, Coach Rooney, Coach Martin and most importantly Coach Sal Locascio.
Coach Locascio has been an unbelievable mentor, coach and role model. He has taught me how to play lacrosse, be a leader and how to compete until the final whistle.
I feel he and I will share a special bond for years to come. I would also like to thank Coach Sean Keenan who has spent endless hours helping me improve my game and is always ready to give me sound advice.
