When it comes to the job description for an attackman, first and foremost is the ability to put the ball in the net.
Charlie McGovern can do just that.
The Class of 2015 standout at Connecticut power Wilton will be taking his finishing ability to Division III power Union, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound McGovern, a lefty, is a skilled offensive player with a nose for the net.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Charlie on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
When going through the recruiting process, I assessed each school athletically, academically and socially.
Athletically, (Union College Head) Coach (Paul) Wehrum has built a very strong lacrosse program that can compete with any team at the Division III level.
Academically, Union is a very strong liberal arts institution with a fantastic reputation. Additionally, for a small school Union has a great social scene, and I got along well with the current players on the team.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The other schools that I strongly considered were BU, Tufts, Holy Cross, Wesleyan, Dickinson and Skidmore. I visited all but Dickinson.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My craftiness and my ability to put the ball in the back of the net.
I am good at putting myself into a position to score, and do a good job of finishing my chances.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
One area of my game that I will need to work on in order to compete at the next level would be my dodging and quickness.
In college, the defenders are going to be stronger and faster, so I am going to need to adjust to this faster speed of play by getting quicker and dodging with more confidence.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse at a very young age by my father. He too played lacrosse at the collegiate level, so at a very young age I had a stick in my hands.
At the high school level, I have partaken in the wrestling and football programs, in addition to recreational basketball. I now only play lacrosse and rec basketball.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for both the CT Nuggets and the Warrior Pride lacrosse program. I attended Legacy Elite, Peak 200, and National Invite 175.

I would first like to thank Coach Wehrum and (Union Assistant) Coach (Derek) Witheford for making the recruiting process a great experience.
I would also like to thank my (Wilton) high school coaches, John Wiseman and Steve Pearsall, who have been instrumental in my development as a player.
