Army has made a big push with Long Island’s Class of 2016 and has the results to show it.
One of the Black Knights’ most noteworthy of four rising junior LI verbals came from one of the nation’s premier programs, two-time CHSAA Nassau-Suffolk AAA champion Chaminade, where two-way midfielder Alex Alacqua committed to head coach Joe Alberici, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Alacqua is an extremely athletic player with good speed and skills. He has added strength since his ninth-grade year in 2013 when he was captain of the freshman team at Chaminade in 2013, registering 12 goals and nine assists, leading the Flyers to a 12-3 mark.
Alacqua is also a football standout for the Flyers as a cornerback.
The righty, who now plays travel lacrosse for For the Love of the Game (FLG) after playing for the Manhasset Mavericks, performed well at several marquee showcase events, including Jake Reed’s Nike Bluechip (Rising Sophomores and Rising Juniors), NYLA, Best of the Best, NXT and FLG in 3D.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Alex on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factor in my decision was that West Point is one of the best schools in the country as well as one of the top lacrosse programs in the country. The coaching staff is also unbelievable and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play for (Head) Coach (Joe) Alberici. It is also a privilege to have to opportunity to serve my country.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was talking to Brown, Richmond, Georgetown and Furman. I also had interest from some other schools.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think my strengths are my good stick skills and my lacrosse IQ. I would say my style of play is being a two-way middie who can play offense and defense.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I think need to keep working on my entire game, but specifically my left hand.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I started playing in second grade with my local youth program in Port Washington and then with Manhasset when I moved in the fourth grade.
Any final thoughts?
First, I would like to thank my parents for all their sacrifices and support.
I’d also like to thank my Chaminade coaches: Pomponio, Grismer, Reeves, Kay and Hoey.
I would like to thank FLG for giving me the opportunity to get great exposure to college coaches.
Finally, I’d like to thank my Manhasset coaches: Cherry, Scaring, Garcia and Barrett.
