Joe Simone’s aggressive and unrelenting style of play may not exactly fit his personality off the field.

But as far as Sachem North HS (NY) coach Jason Mauro is concerned, that’s just fine.

“Joe is a good kid who plays with an edge,” Mauro said of the Class of 2015 longstick midfielder. “He plays hard and is coachable.”

Those attributes gained the notice of several collegiate programs, including Division-II Mercy College, the program Simone gave a verbal commitment to earlier this week, a decision reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-7, 160-pound Simone, a righty, combines speed with athleticism to go along with his hard-nosed playing style.

“He contributed on a very good defense last year,” Mauro said. “Joe had a great summer and we are expecting big things from him in his senior season.”

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Joe on his commitment.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Other than Mercy, I visited Oneonta, LIU Post, NYIT and Oswego.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think the strongest parts of how I play is my speed and my communication on the defensive side. My style of play could be described as aggressive and disciplined.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
There is always room for improvement, but I need to work on playing with my weak hand and my one-on-one defense. Both of these will be major aspects in making me a great lacrosse player.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I first found out about lacrosse through two kids who lived on my block. They always used to play outside and one day I picked up a stick and tried it out.

Then, in the winter of seventh grade, I tried out for the team and loved the game ever sense.

I used to play football, basketball, and volleyball.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I don’t play on a travel team, Sachem north has a summer league that we play against all the travel teams. I also went to Blue Chip 225, and also attending the Island Uprising at Stony Brook.

Any final thoughts?
I just want to thank everyone who helped me through this whole process, my coaches who do a lot for the program and teaching us everything they know, my teammates for all the support, and my parents who are always there to support me.
