It’s the busiest time of year for major D-I commitments in the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for lacrosse, the NY/NJ/CT tristate region. Get caught up right here, right now.
There’s no telling where Lehigh University’s recruiting Class of 2017 will end. But there will never be any doubt where it began.
In Miller Place on Long Island.
That’s where midfielder Kevin Gersbeck gave the Mountain Hawks their first rising sophomore verbal, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-9, 158-pound righty is an athletic dodger with good speed.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Kevin on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I was looking for a school with a great combination of academics and athletics. I was also looking at the majors that were offered that I was interested in. Having a winning lacrosse team and coaching staff made it easier for me to decide.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Providence, Harvard, and Rutgers and considered Boston University and Air Force.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I have good speed in between the lines and I am a good dodger from up top.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Playing for Lehigh means I need to hit the weight room and work on my lefty shot on the run. I will also work on adjusting to the speed of the college game.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My dad and uncle played lacrosse in high school and in college.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Team Miller Place. I was chosen as a top 20 rising sophomore in Suffolk County. I was a Peak 200 all-star, Fab Frosh all-star, and attended Crimson Elite and Rutgers showcases. This summer I also played at LI Trilax, Lehigh Laxfest, Princeton and Hofstra tournaments.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my coach, Keith Lizzi who put Miller Place on the lacrosse map, as well as Coaches Skillman and Belevadere. Of course I would also like to thank my family who are at all my games and are always there to support me.
