It’s the busiest time of year for major D-I commitments in the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for lacrosse, the NY/NJ/CT tristate region. Get caught up right here, right now.
As a youngster, Brody McCoy enjoyed competing in a rare combination of sports — football and gymnastics.
But then, he was introduced to lacrosse by his father and older brother.
It didn’t take long for the Sachem North (NY) Class of 2017 longstick midfielder to find his sport of choice. Soon, he will be playing it at the Division I level.
McCoy verbally committed to Air Force, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound McCoy, a righty, is the Flaming Arrows’ second rising sophomore verbal, joining Maryland-bound attackman James Avanzato.
“Brody is a good athlete with a good motor,” Sachem North coach Jason Mauro said. “We moved him back to LSM this summer and he was great. We believe he will keep getting better the more and more he plays. He’s another multi-sport athlete who we love to coach.”
Now, here’s a Q&A with Brody on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I have always had the dream to attend the United States Air Force Academy. The Air Force Academy offers a top-notch education as well as a D-I athletic experience.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I had also spoken to the coach of UMass Lowell. I did not pursue any other school because nothing can offer what Air Force does.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am a strong athlete with very quick feet and a lot of speed. I also believe I am good at communicating with my teammates while playing defense
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Since I was just moved to LSM, my stick skills are not what I would like them to be.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Sachem North has a summer team that almost all the varsity players play on. i had also made it to the second cut in the Suffolk (Long Island Showcase) tryouts.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank both my parents for always dropping what they were doing to give me rides to practices and driving out to the summer tournaments.
I would also like to thank my brother for his continous support throughout everything.
And finally, I would also like to thank the coaches as well as my teammates from Sachem North for always being around to help develop and get to where I am now.
