The play of its defensive midfielders, mostly notably Cole Perry, played a big role in the Greenwich High School boys lacrosse team winning a Connecticut state title for the first time in school history this past spring.
Even though Perry will be moving on to Denison University, expect that theme to continue in 2015 for the Cardinals, thanks in large part to Danny Colligan.
Colligan, a rising junior, verbally committed to St. John’s University last week, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot, 160-pound Colligan, a righty who also sees time at short-stick d-middie, joins Providence-bound midfielder Will Perry as Class of 2016 verbals for GHS.
“Danny is one of the most talented LSMs I have coached,” Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley said. “He is a younger version of Cole Perry and has a great mix of speed and great stick skills. St. John’s is getting a great player and even better young man.”
Now, here’s a Q&A with Danny on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
St. John’s has a wonderful program. They play a tough schedule and always compete with their opponents no matter how big a name they might be.
I love the area of New York City and I am very interested in computer science and their department is filled with a deep course offering and world-class professors, so I felt like it was the right choice for me.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Holy Cross, BU, Yale, Dartmouth, Loyola and a few other D-III schools.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think that I am fast and have go-to quick footwork. I am good on the wing getting groundballs and I play good team defense. I think I make a lot of the right decisions whether it be to switch to a player who might be a more offensive threat than another, or when I’m running the ball upfield to pass to a good finisher rather than take the selfish outside shot.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work hard in the gym so that I can push around some of the bigger kids instead of having to chase them as much.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
The youth program at Greenwich Youth Lacrosse is incredible. I attribute much of my success to that program with Pat Coleman and the many coaches who worked with me to improve.
Also, Coach (David) Roth in seventh grade who told me to try playing LSM. I played soccer freshman year at highschool and like to play it in my free time.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for CP Lax in the summer and have played at Maverick Showtime, Under Armor Shootout, 3d Bluechip and others.
Any final thoughts?
Pat Coleman and the GYL program as I said before, my amazing high school Coach Bulkley, of course my family who gave me all the support in the world, and all of my teammates who pushed me that extra inch to make me the better player that I am today.
