A desire to play closer to home wound up being the difference in one of the tristate’s top Class of 2015 players having a change of course in his college destination.

Star attackman and St. Anthony’s High School (NY) standout Michael Laviano has verballed to Boston University after decommitting from a previous verbal to Ohio State, decisions first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

recruiting_updateLaviano also considered in Maryland after deciding on a new destination.

“I visited BU about a week after I decommitted from Ohio State,” Laviano said. “When I went there, I fell in love with the city of Boston right away.

“(BU) Coach (Ryan) Polley took me all around campus for about two hours telling me everything there is to know about BU and automatically knew it would be a great fit for me.”

Laviano, a transfer from Holy Trinity, was the quarterback of the St. Anthony’s offense this past season, finishing second in scoring on the team behind Joe Licciardi, with 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points. Those stats don’t begin to show Laviano’s impact on the offense, as he’s known for getting numerous hockey assists. He entered this past season coming off an ACL injury.  He is a quick and shifty feeder/finisher who committed to Ohio State in September 2012.

“I first started thinking about decommitting from Ohio State when I matured enough to realize I did not want to be that far from home,” Laviano said. “Boston is only a four-hour drive and way more convenient for myself to go home or have my family come visit me witch was a huge part of my decision.”
