Luke Millican, one of the top goaltenders in the Class of 2017, will be going from his home state of Texas to play his college lacrosse in the Ivy League.
Millican, who plays at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, has verbally committed to the admissions process at the University of Pennsylvania, as first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot, 157-pound Millican, a righty, had a save percentage of 64.3 and started all 18 games for his varsity team this past spring, helping it make the Elite 8 for the first time in school history. He was named varsity defensive MVP and received Texas all-district honorable-mention.
Playing club for Iron Horse and StickStar, he was selected an All-Star at T99 and the Denver Shootout and was a 2014 Black Card, Jake Reed and Maverik Showtime selection.
Millican has quick hands, good feet and is very active outside of the cage on clears and in initiating fastbreaks.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Luke on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Strong academic and honors programs in business, math and science, the campus and city feel, coaches and team, the culture and ability to compete for conference titles and the NCAA Tournament.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Schools with which I completed an unofficial visit were Syracuse, Maryland, Penn, Princeton, Cornell, BU, and Duke. I considered Yale, Navy and Georgetown, but had not visited list.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I always need to stop more balls and will continue to improve hand speed and reaction time. I am naturally a quiet guy and will continue to work on being more direct on the field.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Lacrosse is newer in Texas as most of us started playing in third or fourth grade. We were lucky to have dads/coaches in our town who played at a very high level and were willing to share their passion for the game. I have loved the game since day one.
In seventh and eighth grade, I played football and lacrosse and wrestled for my school team. As lacrosse became a year-round commitment I had to give up wrestling, but I still play football for my high school.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Coach Surran and Iron Horse Dallas and for Coach Crimmins and StickStar Lacrosse. This summer, I was selected for T99, Black Card, Jake Reed, and Maverik Showtime and played/will play in the Denver Shootout, Best of the Best, Terp Classic, and UVA and UNC team camps with my club teams.
Any final thoughts?
I definitely would not be here without my teammates and I have been blessed with some awesome coaches. Coach DiBello taught me the key fundamentals of the position and coaches Surran, Sullivan, Cole and Lynch have helped me mature with still a long way to go.
