Alex Buckanavage’s lacrosse skills sparked the interest of several of the nation’s top Division I programs.
But in deciding on his collegiate destination, Buckanavage looked beyond lacrosse.
The quick and elusive attackman at the Brunswick School (CT) says academic reputation and a global alumni network were two of the reasons he decided to verbally commit to the University of Michigan.

The 5-foot-8, 158-pound Buckanavage is a creative feeder/finisher with a nose for the net who changes directions well and has outstanding field vision.
Buckanavage is the brother of former Ridgefield (Conn.) High School All-America midfielder Andrew Buckanavage, who will be a senior this fall at the University of Vermont.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Alex on his commitment, followed by his player profile and highlight reel.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Academics were first on my list and Michigan is one of the best (public or private) schools in the country. The alumni network of Michigan is not only national, but global.
The money committed to the lacrosse program is unrivaled and the lacrosse facilities that I will step into will be amazing. I can’t think of a more exciting conference to play in than the Big Ten.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered a lot of schools but after visiting many I came to the conclusion that I was drawn toward a larger university with a multitude of student activities and big-time sports environment. I visited Michigan, Penn State, Virginia and Ohio State.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my field vision, strong stick skills and my quickness.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I am a lefty so everyone thinks I can’t shoot righty. So, I will have to continue to work on my right hand. Playing against bigger defenders will require me to get stronger and more physical which will require me to commit to time in the weight room.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Gary Mathias and Darren Muller held a dinner in Ridgefield when I was in third grade to get me to play lacrosse. I thank them because without their constant convincing and persistence then my dad would have never made the change from baseball to lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for 3d Select New England and the 3d National Team. I went to the Prep School Showcase, Denver Shootout, Big 4 Champions Tournament in Philly. Later this summer I will attend the NXT Summer Invitational and Maverik Showtime.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank all my family and friends that helped me get to where I am today.
I would also like to thank all of my coaches: Dave Bruce, Dave Jenkins, Jim Philbin, Chris Blair, Roy Colsey and Nate Loeb.
I would also like to thank my brother Andrew for making me play with him everyday and lifting, pushing me to be a better lacrosse player and someone I look up to him for his work ethic and how hard he works on and off the field.
