It’s a long way from Middlebury, Vt., to the Air Force Academy in Colorado, but Chandler Devaney can’t wait to make the trip.
Devaney, a Class of 2017 defender at the Proctor Academy in New Hampshire, committed to Air Force this week, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Devaney, a righty, is an outstanding position defender with ideal size.
An outstanding athlete, Devaney also plays football and hockey. He started for Proctor’s varsity football team at inside linebacker and played JV hockey.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Chandler on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I have wanted to be part of a service academy for quite some time and I really liked the Air Force Academy.
The school also has some of the best academic and athletic resources one could ask for.
The coaches there are fully devoted to winning a national championship and the players seemed to be as well. I look forward to following in their foot steps.
What were the schools you were considering?
I considered Syracuse, Virginia, Navy, Villanova and High Point.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your play?
One of my key attributes is my body positioning. I keep topside well and stay on the bottom hand. I would consider my style of play as patient, I find staying on the hip and waiting for a takeaway check is much better than being too aggressive and getting beat.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I think that I need to work on my clearing, long passes and stretching the field.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
The same as most kids, a couple of friends played so I decided to try it out. The youth program in my hometown (Middlebury, Vt.) is also a great organization with great coaching.
What travel team do you play on and what events/showcases have attended?
I play on a new organization in the state of Vermont called 802 Lacrosse. I have attended Philly Freshman Showcase (all-star), Fab Frosh and Prep School Lacrosse Showcase.
Any final thoughts?
I want to thank my parents for everything they have done for me as well as all my family and friends who have supported me along the way. I also want to thank all of the coaches that I’ve had while playing lacrosse especially my club coach (Reyn Garnett) and high school coach (Tucker Prudden). Lastly, I’d like to thank all of my teammates who have pushed me to play to the best of my ability.
