New Canaan enters 2014 in pursuit of a three-peat in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference in Connecticut.
The Rams beat Greenwich 8-5 in last year’s FCIAC final. It was New Canaan’s eighth FCIAC title overall.
For a look at New Canaan in 2014, we check in with Michael Kraus.
The junior attackman, an effective feeder and finisher, had 33 goals and 21 assists last season and is headed to the University of Virginia.
Now, here are Michael’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Since football season ended, we have been running and lifting as a team. We also have a really fun Box Lacrosse League all winter.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is very competitive both in and out of conference. Obviously we always have Darien circled in red. I am also really looking forward to playing St. Anthony’s at Princeton. And it’s great to have Fairfield Prep back on our schedule.
Scrimmaging Avon Old Farms and Niskayuna should have us well prepared for the season.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Although we lost three seniors on defense, we have reloaded and actually have more depth at the defensive position. We also have all our d-mids, LSMs, and goalie Trent Nader returning, so we are expecting to play great team defense again this year.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Our “team play.” We have great chemistry and play really well together.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The FCIAC is always strong. New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, Wilton and Ridgefield will all be fighting it out.
