Any conversation about contending teams for both the Connecticut Class L state and Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference titles will include the name Greenwich.
The Cardinals, who won the FCIAC title in coach Scott Bulkley’s first season as head coach in 2010, advanced to the state title game in 2012.
GHS went 15-6 last season, falling to New Canaan in the FCIAC championship game and to rival Staples in the state tournament.
For a look at the 2014 Cardinals, we check in with Jack Harrington.
One of the top defenders in the Northeast, Harrington, a senior, committed to Duke midway through his sophomore year, in 2011.
The 6-foot-3 Harrington combines size and skills along with a high lacrosse IQ.
Now, here are Jack’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
In order to get ready for the season, the team has been doing team lifting and distance running three times a week.
Additionally, we have been playing in a winter full field league at Chelsea Piers in Stamford. A lot of the team has also been participating in stick skill clinics.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We will play a very competitive schedule this year. The team is looking forward to playing Chaminade at home as well as playing Bronxville for our out of conference games. In conference Darien, Ridgefield, and New Canaan are always big games.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Graham Savio left for Loyola this year which was a huge loss at the faceoff X. However, Mike Sullivan has been playing very well all winter and definitely will surprise a lot of people.
Ryan Flippin is a senior who will be a standout midfielder this year. Tommy Rogan will be our new goalie this year and he has really stepped up and into the role.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
This year the strength of our team will be our experience. We return almost every starter for the last two years and the group has been playing together for a long time. We are also lucky enough to have younger guys who have been willing to work hard and accelerate their learning curve over this entire winter.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The FCIAC is always a very strong conference and it is very difficult to place any one of those teams in any order. We expect very strong teams in Wilton, Darien, New Canaan and Ridgefield.
