Owen Daly plays midfield the way it was intended to be played.

The athletic and physical junior at Lynbrook High School (N.Y.) is as valuable on defense as he is on offense.

“I take pride in my defense and groundball play, and I can also take faceoffs,” he said. “I am an aggressive offensive player and would consider myself old school.”

Daly will be taking his throwback style of play out East. He gave a verbal commitment earlier this week to Stony Brook University, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Daly has been a key contributor on Lynbrook’s varsity squad since his freshman year. He also plays football for the Owls as a tight end/linebacker.

Daly is Stony Brook’s second 2015 tristate commit, joining defender Andrew Alejo of Syosset.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Owen on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Stony Brook University offered all the things I looked for in a college. The opportunity to get a world-class education while playing top-level lacrosse really appealed to me. The location and also having my intended major were main factors in my decision.

(Stony Brook Head) Coach (Jim) Nagle and his staff care about their players and are striving for a national championship. I am excited to learn from them, and play my college lacrosse under them.  I fit in well with the team and I cannot be more excited to be a part of the Stony Brook family.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also visited Air Force, Yale, UMass, Dartmouth, St. John’s and Fairfield.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I believe I can improve on every aspect of my game. Particularity this off season I am focused on my offhand, shooting on the run, and overall speed and strength.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
My cousins introduced me to lacrosse. They played at Rutgers and were the first to show me the game. My father, who was also my PAL youth coach, took it from there and I really just fell in love with the sport.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Checkmate Sharks and Turf Island Oilers in the summer. This winter, I played in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Tournament in Tampa with Checkmate. I attended National Invitational 175 this past summer along with Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip. I also participated in the Long Island Showcase with Team Nassau.

Any final thoughts?
I want to start out thanking my parents. Without them, I would not be in the position I am in today. Their constant support and encouragement have helped me immensely. From taking me around to different showcases and tournaments, I cannot thank them enough.

I want to thank my brother and sister for their love and support.  I am so grateful to have them in my life. Along with my parents, my brother and sister are my biggest fans.

I also want to thank my high school coaches Bill Leighley and Brian Hetrick. They are always there to answer my questions and give great advice and support. I am excited to spend my next two years of high school playing for them. I want to thank all the Coaches I have had in my life who have helped me become the player I am today.
