St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) enters the 2014 varsity season on a mission after seeing its run of four straight CHSAA AAA titles ended last season.
The Friars will have no shortage of college-bound players aiming to achieve that goal. St. A’s has 17 — count ’em — 17 Class of 2014 commits alone.
One of them, starting defenseman Dan O’Brien, will spend a post-grad season at Avon Old Farms (Conn.) in 2015 before enrolling at Army.
“The main factors in my decision were academic honors that comes with the West Point experience and the fact that Army’s a great lacrosse program and has a great staff with (Head) Coach (Joe) Alberici and (Assistant) Coach (Mac) Diange. I also feel that a military career will put me in a good place for future employment.”
A fast and quick player, O’Brien is an aggressive, takeaway defender. He played for FLG’s travel program last summer, and is now planning on playing with the Long Island Lobsters.
“I started playing lacrosse in second grade for Cold Spring Harbor town league and have been going strong since then,” he said. “Many of the kids I started with I still play with today.”
