Dylan Joy had never stepped foot on the University of Vermont’s sprawling and scenic campus in Burlington, Vt., prior to an unofficial visit there last year.
The Class of 2016 defender/longstick midfielder came away convinced he had found a perfect.
“Burlington is a great place and I’m excited to be there for four years,” said the three-year varsity standout at Ganada High School (N.Y.), which is located east of Rochester.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Joy, a lefty who thrives in fast-paced situations, plays travel lacrosse for Sweetlax. He was named defensive MVP of the Capital Challenge all-star game this past summer. You can watch his highlight reel here.
He is also an outstanding student, with a 3.6 grade-point average.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Dylan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The University of Vermont was amazing and had everything I was looking for academically and athletically. The coaching staff was truly great. I felt right at home with (Vermont Head) Coach (Ryan) Curtis, (Assistant) Coach (Mike) Kruger and (Assistant) Coach (Patrick) March.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Ohio State, Canisius, Hobart, St. John’s and Mount St. Mary’s. I visited Canisius, Hobart and St. John’s.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths as a player are my lacrosse IQ, speed, one-on-one defense, groundballs, checks, stick skills and my transition game. I would describe my style of play as aggressive and fast paced.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I can continue to work on everything, but I need to continue to work on getting stronger and being more physical.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I started playing lacrosse in second grade when my youth coach, Dave Fisher, introduced me to the sport. I have been playing lacrosse ever since. I have also been playing football since first grade, and am the quarterback on my varsity football team.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play travel lacrosse for Sweetlax, coached by Kevin Martin, and attended the Maverik Showtime, Jake Reed Fall Blue Chip, Capital Challenge. I also attended the King of the Hill, Crabfeast, Best of the Best, Philly Invitational, Quakerfest and Harvard Crimson Classic, all with Sweetlax.
Any final thoughts?
