It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
The 2013 Wilton Warriors were living proof of just that.
Wilton won the Connecticut Class M state title after starting the season 1-4.
One of the catalysts to the 17th-seeded unlikely run to glory was the play of attackman Brendan Devane.
Now a senior, Devane will be further strengthening Wilton’s bond with the Bryant University program. Bryant head coach Mike Pressler was an All-American for Wilton his senior year in 1978 and is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. Peter McMahon, a 2009 WHS grad, wrapped up his collegiate career at Bryant last year.
After one final varsity season, Devane will become the latest Warrior turned Bulldog.
Now, here are Brendan’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I have been playing as much lacrosse as possible, whether it’s shooting in my backyard or playing winter lacrosse at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. Chelsea Piers gives us a great opportunity to face tough opponents like Fairfield Prep, Ridgefield, Greenwich, Brunswick and Bronxville.
Frequently playing against talented competition is extremely helpful towards our development as a team. To further prepare for the upcoming season, the team has been running and lifting throughout the week.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Every year our schedule gets harder and there are always a few new teams we play. We are scheduled to play Mercer Island from Washington.
I am looking forward to that game, because I have always wanted to play against a high school from the West Coast. However, I am most looking forward to playing Yorktown, New Canaan, Darien and Ridgefield.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Since our starting lineup consisted of mainly seniors last year there will be many new players making an impact this season. Senior middies Dan Baird and Will Garbus are very talented two-way middies. On defense we have three juniors TJ Savvaides, Jack Dexter and Tyler Mirable and I am confident they will provide us with an outstanding team defense this year.
Also, there are a couple of highly skilled sophomores such as LSM Michael Brown and midfielder Harrison Bardwell. Lastly, Christian Hansson (junior, midfield) and Michael Lynch (junior, attack) will be a major part of our offensive production this season.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think that the strength our team this year will be both our offense and defensive.
There is a lot of depth in our midfield, and that will provide with two solid midfield lines.
Also, our attack contains a lot of skilled dodgers, and that will help us produce many goals this season. Lastly, we have three very athletic and intelligent defensemen who can play good man to man and off ball defense.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The FCIAC race this year is going to very competitive since there are many teams that are capable of finishing on top. I believe the contending teams this year will be Wilton, Darien, Greenwich, Ridgefield, Staples and New Canaan.
