You would have a tough time arguing whether Ian Burgoyne is more valuable to the Darien High School (Conn.) boys lacrosse team on either offense or defense.

That’s because Burgoyne is the protoypical two-way midfielder.

“I enjoy playing defensive midfield just as much offense,” he said.

It’s that kind of versatility — coupled with the combination of size and skills — that made him the athletic, in-between-the-lines standout a prime Division I recruiting target.

Burgoyne decided on his Division I destination last week, giving a verbal to Navy, as first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

Burgoyne, a ighty who is dangerous in the open field and effective at both shooting and passing on the run, also has outstanding field vision.

The 6-foot-3, 160-pound Burgoyne also plays basketball for the Blue Wave.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Ian on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The Naval Academy has been of interest to me for quite a while. I really liked (Navy Head) Coach (Rick) Sowell, (Assistant) Coach (Ryan) Wellner and (Assistant) Coach (J.L.) Reppert. I look forward to being part of the program.

The combination of athletics, academics and career is unmatched anywhere else. It’s an honor to play for a program that has been around for 100 years. I am looking forward to being part of the Navy heritage.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I talked to several schools and I visited Brown, West Point, Princeton and UNC.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Strength training and conditioning are my main focus right now.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I was introduced to lacrosse through a friend on my baseball team back in fifth grade. His dad, Jim Book, was a huge help in getting me started and helping me find my love for the game.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you play in?
I play with the CT Chargers 2015 Blue team. Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip and National Invitational 175 were my favorite showcases.

Any final thoughts?
Of course, I would like to thank (Darien Head) Coach (Jeff) Brameier for helping me through the whole process and coaching me all along the way. Also my teammates at Darien.

I’d like to thank my summer coach, Jackson Kiniry, as well as Jim Book and all the other incredibly committed youth league coaches for helping me to improve and find my love for lacrosse.
