Renwick Wilson’s college decision came down to more than lacrosse. A lot more.
“I want to attend a college that is dedicated to improving the environment while also providing a superior education in the sciences,” said the senior at Greenwich High School (Conn.).
Wilson found what he was looking for in Oberlin College in Ohio.
The midfielder’s decision, first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider expanded coverage section, gives Greenwich six Class of 2014 commits
Wilson’s commitment gives Greenwich six senior commits.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Renwick on his decision.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Oberlin is renowned for its science department and is nationally recognized for its commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives.
Of course, I also was looking for a great lacrosse program where the coaches and players were really bonded and driven about playing lacrosse. Oberlin offered all of these, and will enable me to pursue a joint degree through its 3/2 program with Columbia University in environmental engineering, which is why it was a great fit both academically and athletically.
Another huge factor in my decision was that both (Oberlin Head) Coach (Topher) Grossman and (Assistant) Coach (Bill) Schmoldt are fantastic. Witnessing the respect and friendship between these coaches and the team members themselves made me feel like it was a team I would really like being part of.
Coach Grossman is building a great lacrosse program at Oberlin and he has the ability to win to the NCAC tournament and I am looking forward to helping him achieve that goal.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered Yale and Dartmouth, and I considered and visited Williams, Amherst, Wesleyan and Swarthmore.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I am always working on my strength and speed, but in particular, I want to focus more on my left-handed shot.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I started playing lacrosse in seventh grade with Greenwich Youth Lacrosse and realized what a great game it was. I have also run varsity indoor track the last three years. Additionally I played club water polo and I sail.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
For the past two summers, I have played for the Chelsea Piers Lacrosse Club (CP Lax) and before that I played for the CT Chargers.
Over the past year or so, I have played in the Philly Showcase, New England Top 150, Good to Great Showcase, Yale’s Whiz Kids, and National Invite 175 showcases, as well as at King of the Hill, Tri State, the Bulldog Bash and Hofstra Blue and Gold tournaments. I made athe ll-star teams at both Whiz Kids and Good to Great.
Any final thoughts?
Mainly, I would like to thank my parents for all their support and my varsity coaches, Scott Buckley and Frank Wells, for their coaching and guidance at Greenwich High School and through this whole process.
I would also like to thank my GYL youth coaches Pat Coleman and Bill Ellsworth, as well as CT Chargers coach Jeff Brameier, for their instruction and really instilling in me a love for the game.
