Michael Kraus was familiar with the University of Virginia long before he committed to the Cavaliers.
You see, Kraus’ father, Steve Kraus, and his uncle, Andy Kraus, both played at UVa. Steve Kraus was a midfielder for the Cavaliers from 1978-81 and Andy Kraus, also a midfielder, played from 1988-91. Both were captains and All-Americans for UVa.
The latest Kraus to become a Cavalier is an attackman at New Canaan High School (Conn.) whose official commitment to UVa was first reported when it was made, on Sept. 7, by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider expanded coverage section.
Michael Kraus will play for the Cavaliers from 2016-20. Now a junior at NCHS, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Kraus is planning on a post-grad year before enrolling in UVa as a freshman in the fall of 2016.
The lefty Kraus, an effective feeder and finisher, had 33 goals and 21 assists on a Rams team that won the FCIAC championship and advanced to the CIAC Class M semis this past spring. You can watch his highlight reel here.
He is a wide receiver on the NCHS football squad who also likes to surf, ski and play pond hockey.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Michael on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Academics was my first priority. But I also considered how comfortable I felt with the coaches and team and my family history.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Michigan, Penn, Princeton, Cornell and Notre Dame.
How would you describe your style of play?
I’ve been playing a lot of field/box hybrid. It’s really helped with my feeding, dodging and finishing.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
My righty outside shot.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I can’t ever remember not having a lacrosse stick.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
This summer I played with the CT Chargers and 3D Canada. I also went to Jake Reed Blue Chip and Maverik Showcase
Any final thoughts?
I really need to thank my high school coach, Chip Buzzeo. He’s been a great inspiration and motivator. Also Coach (Jeff) Brameier, the 3D coaches (especially Sean Allen).
And of course, my dad, my uncle Andy and my brothers.
