Lacrosse is a fast-paced game.
That suits Sam Saleeby just find.
The athletic midfielder from Greenwich High School (Conn.) thrives in unsettled situations, using his speed to set up his shot.
“Sam is one of the best pure shooters I have on my team,” Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley said.
Needless to say, those type of skills translate well to the next level.
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Saleeby, a righty, decided where that will be, verballing to Dickinson College on July 30, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider section.
“His hard work on his overall game has put him in this position today,” Bulkley said of Saleeby, who plays on the Chelsea Piers Lacrosse Club travel team. “He will be a tremendous addition to Dickinson.”
Now, here’s a Q&A with Sam on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The combination of a respected lacrosse program and a good education, Dickinson offers both those qualities.
In addition, (Dickinson Head) Coach (Dave) Webster really helped me see why I would enjoy Dickinson. He is a great coach and I’m looking forward to playing for him.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Trinity, Hamilton, High Point and Lynchburg.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths as a player include my speed and my shot. I love getting my hands free and playing a fast game.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Strength and agility are two areas that I am constantly working on.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I started playing lacrosse in third grade with Greenwich Youth Lacrosse.
I also played varsity water polo.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
During the summer I played for Chelsea Piers at King of the Hill, Bulldog Bash and Hofstra Blue and Gold tournaments. I also participated in New England Top 150 and National Invitational 175.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank all the volunteer coaches that pushed me to become better when I was in the youth league program like Coach Pat Colman, Coach Miller and Coach Roth.
I also would like to thank my high school coaches Scott Bulkley, Coach Joe Virtiak, Frank Wells, Nick Hautau and Kevin Faughnan.
